As is the case with all middle school teachers, I have to teach an extra class that kids can sign up for. My school has mega-admin issues, and so the last time around the class was essentially non-functional.
This time things should go a little smoother, though, and I'm coming up with ideas. There have to be 20 classes, and some of the ideas below are multi-class ideas. Thus far I'm thinking the following:
Survivor--- I came up with an activity where the students have to choose 6 people from a list of 18 and explain why they are taking those 6. This would be followed by watching an episode of Survivor.
A friend's lesson on opposites
Kids write a comic--- can't remember the korean word for those little animated books that people read, but the kids would write a story, and then rather than illustrate it, they would make/bring costumes and I would take pictures and then splice them together on my mac with word and thought bubbles etc, to make one of those comic things.
Book report class--- by class two they have to choose a book. If korean book they have to write and present a longer essay, if english book, a shorter essay.
Biology class (student request)
Universe Class (student request)
Pop music (student request, need to think of something--- maybe field trip to a Noribang)
Shopping (trip to emart) I give them an english shopping list anda price limit and they have to shop.
Corporate ladder card game. A card game where I gt them to speak and talk about things while playing, uses both hemispheres of the brain, so in theory it should improve language skills.
Jenga game
Monopoly and business English
Movies: when all else fails, take the easy road.
So anything beyond these would be appreciated. Ideally the less work/effort involved the better. Also, after a 10 minute meeting with the students, they seem to be of widely varying levels, so ultra high lessons wont work, and high lessons may not work--- my hope is that the book report might make a few of the really low students leave... |

I have a question.
You said 20 classes....is that in addition to your regular schedule or does that include your regular schedule? Because your regular schedule should have a set cirriculum no? |

This is an Over time class. I get paid extra. It's twice a week after school, and students have to sign up for it, and I think their parents have to pay, if I'm not mistaken.
No set curriculum, all my choice. |

I'll be doing the same at my school, however, I don't have time to write about some ideas now. I'll contribute later. |

I have the same thing. 100 classes. Four times a week. After the first twenty, I get OT. So, I will get 80 hours of OT for 7th period work this semester. I chose the curriculum. On Monday we will start doing vid/voice recordings of the 30 students so we can measure their progress at the end of the semester. This is an advanced class, and we are going to work on normalizing speech. I ahve already broken them into four teams. They named themselves, "No Brain, Get Outta Here, Sexy Baby, and Baby Alien". Each week we will have speech competitions, and at the end of the semester, I will take the five boys from the winning team out for pizza. The class was really popular last semester, and we had to choose twenty out of the 80 or so who asked to join. |
