This boy maybe 9 or 10 is a real boy's boy. His writing homework is always about killing and death etc. No big deal. but today he comes up to me and has about 5 dashes going across the back of his wrist with the word "cut" written underneath it. Would you tell your boss or let it slide?

I'd tell, but that's just me.

Someone may have to talk to this boy but tell me: were the dashes written or carved? If they were carved, I'd refer him to the school psychologist right away. (Do they have such things in Korea?)

If it was merely written, I'd speak to him and try to gauge the nature of his obsession. It may just be innocent "boy's boy" stuff, as you say. I recently had a 12yo totally obsessed with Chucky. While most other students were bringing their cellphones to school, he carried in his bag a portable DVD player with the Chucky DVD around with him. I have spoken with him at length on several occasions, in and out of school, and I have no fear that he will turn into a serial killer. Indeed, I gave him a 10 for the Chucky story he wrote for Creative Writing as it was absloutely wonderful, illustrated and complete with a teacher getting killed! Now the kid was almost a nightmare in class but only because he is always fooling around and not working. I'd love to find a writing scholarship for him. It may be his salvation.

That's nice that the boy likes to write about famous me. Laughing

Instead of killing the teacher, I would recommend to him about the evil hakwon director.

Seriously, to the OP, I would let someone know about your student.

Admittedly, some children do go through phases where they are obsessed with death and dying. However, the wrist thing is quite worrying. I would bring it to someone's attention, but don't be surprised if it is dismissed as him just playing around.

it was all written in black pen

I guess my main concern is being the rat and his parents giving him the once over and then him resenting me for the rest of the year because I sold him out over something that was just a joke but of course if he does try something stupid that's a little bit more of a burden

I wouldn't say anything...yet, but I would keep an eye on him. If I thought the student as become too morose or obsessed, I would absolutely say something or write a note to either the school nurse, or his homeroom teacher.

Tell him not to cut across his wrist. Cut up the wrist. More damage...more chance of quick death.

Deal someone else in. Mention it casually to a colleague, advisor, whoever you want - not doing so is an invitation for the kid to keep messing with your head.

Whenever you're unsure about an ethical question like this it's wise to deal someone in. And this forum doesn't count. CYA - ounce of prevention, pound of cure.

Personally, I could care less what a student has written on his/her wrist. And, don't think for a minute that you, the "English" teacher has exclusive knowledge of this. The K-folk know of it as well and it's their role to intervene if they feel it necessary.
