Now that I've settled in properly, I'm realising that I haven't phoned to anyone back home (Ireland/London) since I got here. Does anyone know of a relatively easy and/or cost-effective way to do this? I was gonna get Skype, but I think I'd need a credit card to pay for the calls. (which I don't have)

The 10,000 calling cards get you a decent number of minutes to the UK. Apparently mobile phones are pretty cheap for international calls as well if you have one on a contract. I haven't had a bill for mine yet so I am not sure if there is any truth in it.

I am sure the right answer for you is to go to Itaewon or in front of the Seoul Immigration office and get a phone card.

It is all in Korean and you will need a Korean friends help. Even after that it is not easy. You have to buy the pin, then pay for it by putting money directly into their bank account, and it must be done in a way showing you made the deposit. This may all sound bizaar, but it's quite normal in Korea.

provided you have a computer at home and the net, I strongly suggest you download skype and use that.

I have bought a phone number on it from my local area back home for about 6 quid and then my friends can call that number for the cost of a local phone call and it rings my computer here.

you can put credit on your account so you can call out/text from skype with rates that are the same as calling cards.

even better, if your friends have comp etc and they get skype its free to talk, thats how I talk to all of my friends back home

all you need is a mic to plug into your phone.

anyway, I hope that helps, I just found that calling cards were annoying and this is just such a good way for friends at home to contact you that is really cheap for them which makes them more likely to call Smile

I agree, if you have a computer and a mic calling on your computer is pretty easy. I've heard good and bad about Skype. I use Gizmo Project and it's pretty cheap.
