I'm heading to Korea for a position that starts mid-June however my university Convocation isn't until June 8th and I don't think I'll have enough time to send my degree to Korea get all the paperwork done and then go to my embassy in Canada before my scheduled flight.
I talked to my university about this and they offered a certificate of degree- a document that says that on said date I will be graduating and they said that this along with my complete transcripts should be enough.
What do you think? What are my options? Will immigration accept this certificate? or do I have to make a visa run?
Any ideas or comments would be much appreciated:D |

Run over to the Korean Consulate nearest you and have them notarize that certificate so that it can be validated like a degree before you get on that flight. |

I came to Korea for my first contract with such a certificate from the University of Calgary and it worked like a charm. Just make sure that it is on letterhead and watermarked if possible. |

Things like this USED to be allowed.
Under the CURRENT situation (several high profile events in the last couple years) I highly doubt that immigration would approve a visa confirmation number without the actual DEGREE or Korean embassy certified copy of same.
Feel free to submit the documents but be prepared to have your application declined.
Don't get all starry-eyed because you got a job offer.
There is NO rush to sign on the dotted line.
DON'T be rushed by some recruiter or hakwon director.
Take your time and do it right the first time. That way you will have no problems rise up and bite you in the axx,
The good news however is that there is NO shortage of jobs and the one you are hoping to land will still wait the extra week. It is NOT going to disappear. There are 20,000 job openings and about 11,000 applicants each year. You do the math.

Ttompatz is correct. I used such a document 2 years ago to apply for a visa and there were no problems, but times have changed. When I was applying for my new visa I asked whether such documents are still allowed and the answer was no. Well that was one officer at immigration. We all know how you get different answers at immigration depending on who you talk to.
Don't be rushed. Take you time and do things the easy way. |

It won't work. They are pretty strict now. You'll have to wait until you get your real diploma. Just be patient. |

Thanks everyone for your replies!
I talked to my director and she says it won't work. She isn't pushing me to rush over or anything- it's more me wanting to get out of here ASAP-hahaha. I'll just wait till I get the real degree and send it over- no worries
I spent a very long time sorting through job offers and contracts and am confident with my choice that this will be a good one for me (although I am a newbie and don't know everything) I've been in touch with a teacher at the school (not the one I'm replacing) - both while she is at work and while she is at home- and she seems to be very genuin in her adoration for the school and the director/staff. Although she does have some small complaints it seems to be a good school. I think the only downside I can see thus far is that the school is in Gangnam and my living expenses will be much higher and I might not be able to save up as much.
thanks everyone! |
