Russia Wants UN Probe Of Iran's Detention Of UK Sailors

MOSCOW (AP)--Russia's Foreign Ministry on Friday said the United Nations should conduct an independent investigation of circumstances surrounding the capture of 15 U.K. sailors by Iran.

The ministry made the call in a statement released after talks between U.K. Ambassador Anthony Brenton and Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko.

"Taking into consideration the fact that the British side insists the service personnel were fulfilling the mandate of the U.N. Security Council, we consider that that the U.N. Secretariat should prepare an independent report regarding this particular incident," the ministry said in a statement.

The sailors, part of a U.N.-mandated force patrolling the Persian Gulf, were seized off the Iraqi coast while searching merchant ships for evidence of smuggling.

Iran says the sailors were trespassing in its waters, but U.K. insists they were seized in Iraqi waters and has said no admission of error would be made.

U.K. has frozen most bilateral contacts and referred the issue to the U.N. Security Council, which expressed "grave concern" over Iran's seizure of the military personnel.

Score one for British diplomacy.

Still reminds me of Star Wars: Phantom Menace. Refer the issue to committee...

As much as Russia has interests connected with Iran, if it allows personnel under a U.N. mandate to be taken, and if the British are right about they allege, it would set a very bad precedent if the Russians simply let them get away with this. Completely destroying the U.N. credibility or standing wouldn't be good for the Russians either, and the British made a good argument that the British were under the U.N. mandate. The British didn't attack Iran. If the British were engaging in a military action on Iranian waters they would have been preparing to attack Iran unless the Brits were chasing insurgents going into Iran, which was not happening. Iran needs to stop making excuses and let them go.
