Cochin, in Kerala, is a nice change of pace. India is so diferent to Western eyes, just walking around neighborhoods is good travel. I loved the southern areas, and their colorful temples. Madurai has a good temple, and some more in the hills. A memorable experience was taking the local bus tour in Madurai; we went to a hill temple which gets very few Western visitors. The children, the temple elephant, and the rural setting were delightful. Most major cities have cheap bus tours that cater mostly to Indian tourists. I tried to avoid the obvious Western toursit experiences when I was there.
Mysore has a nice palace and nice wilderness area nearby. A large Tibetan Buddhist settlement (Bylakuppe) is 2-3 hours by bus, and a great visit.
In the north, Varanassi is a must-see. The Taj is beautiful and unique, but exudes "I am a major tourist attraction" from every pore (expensive too). |

| I really liked Darjeeling & Kanchenjunga, & would have liked to have gone north into Sikkim. Goa is another spot I would like to see one day. |

I travelled in India for 3 months with my Indian girlfriend. It was an intense trip !!!
I would say that India is a must travel for anyone who likes to travel.
Best places:
Jaisamler and Johdpur, Rajasthan !
Must see places :
Goa, Mumbai, Utii, Mysore and Agra
I went two years ago, but prices haven't changed much. Check the Lonely Planet guide, they are very handy.
Accomodations in Inda : 2 beds, shower/washroom 300- 500 Rps
All day taxi: $10 - 15 Canadian - he will stay with you and show you around for about 8 hours ! Go eat a a restaurant and he'll meet you when you are done!
Camel/Elephant/Horse rides and treks in the desert: 500 - 1000 Rps per person. At least 3 day excursion with guides (Rajasthan)
India is very inexpensive! Go with another traveller, never by yourself ! Don't be afraid to explore, people are generally friendly and curious..but always becareful....especially if you are a woman, a foreigner, or if you are travelling alone.
I've heard stories about the dangers in Bihar for travellers. |

By the way,
For anyone going to Delhi:
I recommend staying at Majnu-Ka-Tilla, a beautiful Tibetan settlement with top-notch hostels and great food ! Made my stay there really good. Rooms are about Rps 300-400. Excellent services.
If you like Tibetan girls, this is also the place to go
I don't recomend the Paranganj (sp) area. It is a vast and ugly and loud ghetto, meant to rip off tourists. |

Just interested why you would say this? Spent the best part of a year in Indian, Nepal and Bangladesh over three trips in the nineties, all by myself. I had the flexibility to go wherever I wanted, hooked up with other people all the time and could leave them as my desires dictated. India by yourself is a hoot.
OP, I'd like to recommend Kolkata, Sikkim and Orissa state. |

I went twice, once alone and once with someone else. The second time you had someone to share the craziness of all you experience and it just made the experience so much more enjoyable. When I came back from my first solo trip, I had no one to relate to which was a bit of a bummer at times...
I'd recommend Kolkata too. Working at Mother Teresa's home for the Destitute and Dying for a few days is a must do experience. It brought me face to face with things I'd tried to avoid in life (e.g.... death) and was a life changing experience for me. Not pleasant of course but life isn't all about pleasant things... especially for many people in India. |

I did this as well. And while I had great times with the person I was with, I prefer to travel alone. That way I am more likely to meet new people, and travel with them
It is very easy to meet up with others, travel with them while your paths are the same, and move on when they diverge.

I've had better things to do that help a (now deceased) religious nutter let people suffer painful deaths in the name of faith. Still, whatever floats your boat, baby. Still, while the other kids at the hostel were doing that, I was playing cricket on the maidan, checking out a CPI(M)-led general strike or sipping a G&T at the Tollygunge club in memory of my dear old Grandpa who was a soldier there during WWII. |

Travelling alone??
I've met quite a few people trekking by themsleves, especially in Mumbai, which seems to be a hub for travellers.
Too many stories of pain and theft for my liking. I travelled to Mumbai, Bhopal and Delhi by my lonesome and met up wth a hell of alot of trouble.
If you are adventurous why not, but I wouldn't recommend being at the mercy of the locals....its a different culture and you are the outsider. (who will enforce your rights?) |
