Mar 30, 2007 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and South Korea must finish free trade talks by noon EDT (1600 GMT) on Sunday in order for the Bush administration to have time to notify Congress of its intention to sign a deal, the U.S. Trade Representative's office said on Friday.
The announcement gives negotiators more time to resolve difficult issues in sectors such as autos, agriculture and pharmaceuticals as the two countries strive to craft the biggest U.S. free trade deal in 15 years.
Negotiators had been working against a deadline of late Friday Washington time, which is Saturday morning in Seoul.
But after an intense week of talks in Seoul on the proposed pact, "negotiations continue between the U.S. and the Republic of Korea on a number of outstanding issues," USTR spokesman Sean Spicer said in a statement. |

I guess Monday morning we will know.
I really dislike how the Koreans are treating this as a gift to America. I understand that they have to negotiate hard to get the best of any deal, but their rhetoric is beyond arrogant. Such nonsense.
And if it is signed, ratified etc you can bet yer arse that any and all future economic problems in Korea will promptly be blamed on the FTA and all Koreans will accept this to be the "Korean truth" to be repeated over and over and over again (like is done with the Asian financial crises... The Koreans blame it on the IMF, and even call it IMF crises) |
