Hard to believe this could get 100K NZ in funding(probably just a research fellow grant).Nonetheless.

It seems a bit frivolous, but maybe it's worthwhile to investigate a social group that aren't taken seriously in Australia or NZ.
Living in Australia, I used to be surprised at the amount of figurative bogan bashing that goes on, and not just in everyday conversation. Triple J, the youth radio network of the ABC (the national broadcaster, with a PC philosophy) has DJs that do this all the time, there are songs "Nobody Likes a Bogan", and they are the subject of scores of ironic films coming out of the Australian Television, Radio and Film School. The premier institution for media studies.
Point is all these institutions and people, supposedly from politically correct, lefty fields are engaging in breathtaking prejudice that has them sounding like no more enlightened than the racists of old. Even worse these prejudices are broadcast for mass consumption.
Perhaps someone studying a bogan Phd will mark the beginning where people realise that prejudice against someone for their tastes or relative income is not that much different for being prejudiced against someone's race. |

Sure. Just like they're called Chavs in England and Spides in Northern Ireland.
Common usage makes it a word. I've heard many Kiwi's complain about bogans. I think I've even met a few bogans in Korea. |

I could see Goth Culture being looked into as a perceived social group in terms of being tied into-accurately or otherwise-with a general malaise with youth who are disenfranchised with what's going on.
Bogans on the other hand.....what could the guy discuss that couldn't be dealt with in a simple research paper?
Bit of a joke really and I can't see how it could inform any kind of social policy. If he wanted to do it on his coin,so be it. |
