So basically i was in a really bad siutation and i stuck it out for 7 months and changed jobs and made sure to choose a place that would be right for me.
I've been at my new job for about 3 weeks, but my first day was only yesterday. At this new job I have been jerked around already like no tomorrow. I rushed to get to the new job and and was under the impression everything was worked out for my new visa. But was it? no. So i've waited around for the past 2 weeks doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. and losing money at the same time. I would have stayed longer at the old job if I knew this was the case.
Now they can't even seem to tell me what exactly I'll be teaching and when I'll be teaching it. they had me on 9-5 and i said i would do an extra thing at night for more money. Now mysteriously I'm on 1-9 and I don't get paid extra for the thing I said I would do extra at night.... but I still have to do it. and the 1-9 shift is literally babysitting kids. I said... well you told me i would be 9-5... didn't really get a real response, and now newer people than me are getting 9-5.
I've signed for a year at this place, but I already feel jerked around. I don't know what to do.... maybe I've made a major misake and I should have just gone home. I'm so frustrated with this place. everyone else seems more or less dedicated and I would feel pretty bad if I tried to stick it out and then quit, or if I just ran far far away. I don't know. Maybe I should have stayed at my old job....
any advice?? |

If you haven't got the visa yet then you may be able to get a new job. Try the public school system - maximum of 9-5 and reliable pay. Usually opportunities for extra (optional) work at evenings/weekends. |

Theres little point changing jobs in korea because each one is as bad as the next, just in a slightly different way.
Your best hope is to work on improving the situation at wherever you are. Changing jobs just loses you money. |

While there's obviously a ring of truth in that, I don't believe that's generally the case. When I first came to Korea I didn't research the situation properly and ended up working for a chain kids hagwon. Now that I've done my research, I'm working at a much better job in the public system. The only thing I miss about my previous job is the smaller class sizes. |

Despite being regularly p'ed-off with the students at public HS,and knowing that they're not improving at all,I did have 3 days off last week and have a 4 day holiday early May.
If I was was in a hagwon that would probably be the holiday allotment for the entire contract in the boss's mind. |

Can't avoid paying taxes. If you don't like paying taxes, you should move to other planets. |

You shouldn't get taxed more than the legal rate.
Maybe teaching isn't for you and you should take a break and have a real think about what you want to do in life.
What were your reasons for coming to Korea in the first place?

"Tax Exemption - 2 years of income tax exemption (except Canadians):
With the exception of Canadians, all ELIs, regardless of ELI level, are exempt from paying Korean income tax for the first two years of their employment in Korea."
You have to submit official proof of residency to the relevant jurisdictional tax office.
There is currently no tax treaty between Canada and Korea, and so they are taxed between 2 and 4 per cent depending on their ELI level. |
