Dear Everyone!
We've had a job offer at a brand new Talking Club in Gwangyang. We're thinking about it. The contract seems extremely... no-nonsense. They promise only 100 teaching hours per month, but a total of 150 40-minute classes in that time - which seems a lot. That's the most alarming thing in the contract. They also say business casual attire - no t-shirts. I don't know whether or not that's the exception, but our last school allowed t-shirts and fairly casual clothing, which was great. I wouldn't want to wear nice clothes through Korean humidity, you know? So, what can you tell me about this school?
Thanks! |

Do a seacrh, there is more about E. Bo Young schools on here, as recently as a couple of days ago.
There are a couple more things in the contract that you should be weary of: the EBY scheduled holidays that they refer to only amount to about 8 days (not the 10 day standard in most hogwans), there is NO sick leave, they only pay for your flight to come to Korea, and NOT for your retrun fare, they write that for medical insurance, the emplyer may choose (at their discretion), either the National Insurance scheme or a private insurer (actually they are required by law to give you National Health Insurance). Also, those 40 minute classes are taught pretty much back to back, so no real break time in between classes (they will tell you that you have 5 minutes between each class, but that's really just the time that you have to get the kids out of your class and get the next class seated). Next, you should try to work for a school that schedules you by classes, not by teaching time, meaning 100 hours = 100 classes, not 100 hours = 150 x 40-45 minute classes (this is just a trick to get more out of the teachers).
Oh yeah, there is also nothing about severance pay being awarded at the end of the contract. They are required by law to give it to you anyways, but the fact that it's not there, to me, is telling that they may try to get out of it if they feel they don't want to pay it. |

| Sage advice! We just talked to them on the phone, and, after that, we've decided to pass on this one. The more we looked at the contract the less we liked it. |
