Found the PS3 at Technomart for 540,000 (not a bad price... cheaper than you'll find it in the USA, or about the same). I hear it's capable of choosing the language, but you're dependent on game language.

I almost bought it, but couldn't find games. Actually, I found 4 or 5 games. I wanted to buy Resistance, but it's in Japanese. I think I should get English (amazon won't ship resistance from the USA -- probably due to mature content).

Hmm....

That's an awesome price. The relative strength of the won is good for a few things! I've had my American PS3 since January, and it's been flawless. I paid $500 for a 20 gig, and another $100 for shipping. Right now I don't need more space for anything, but eventually I plan to get dirty and install linux. At that time, I'll probably install a bigger hard drive.

I think they can't deliver due to international region laws with games. There may or may not be actual laws against it, but I think they (and many other big-time sites) protect themselves anyway.

Anyway, get games from http://www.play-asia.com

The only downside to a Japanese PS3 is that you can't play US PS2 games or (I believe) DVDs.

Ah, that's good to know!

I'm torn between what to do.

I currently run all of my movies out of my HP computer into my 42" LCD via VGA. My VGA input on the TV will handle 1080p. I am thinking about buying a Blueray drive when they drop in price and then use AnyDVD to copy the BR media onto my hard drive (Anydvd can do this now) so that any BR videos I borrow/buy/rent, I can copy. I can buy and sell some and get most of my money back on auction, I think.

Sound like a good plan? US and Korea are the same region for Blueray movies.

Of course, then I can't plan PS3 games. Wink Urgghhh...

If I get a PS3, we should trade.

For sure, man. Resistance is awesome. I'm currently playing Motorstorm most of the time, and I still bring it down to Hollywoods every Sunday and play NHL 2k7. Those are the only 3 games I have now, but every Thursday they release new material on the Playstation Store as far as demos and whatnot. I'm stoked about the new MLB 2k7 demo.

I'll bring it to Itaewon around 9 tonight to play on his huge projector again.

Smog, that place is in Korea?

Apparently, they import US games and sell them? Also sell Asian games?

What's up with them?

I'm not sure where they're located, but shipping within Korea (not sure about other countries) for small things like games and controllers is free.

I ordered my extra controller and HDMI cable from them when I got the system, so I can attest to it's legitimacy. Also, with the strength of the won, US games end up being the same price as buying them in a store back home.

It takes them a week or two after the US release date to get new games, which is pretty good.

Really? I thought you could only get 1080p out of the HDMI cable. I haven't heard of a VGA --> HDMI solution.

No, you can run 1080p through a VGA cable. VGA cables are used for computer monitors. They can run even higher resolutions than 1080p (1920x1080). It's probably what you have feeding your computer monitor, unless you have DVI (VGA is also known as RGB to some). My TV also accepts a VGA input, so I just run directly from computer monitor out to the TV.

If you have a DVI output on your computer, you can use that, and pipe it into HDMI with the proper cable. They sell cables with DVI on one end, and HDMI on the other. I did this at my gf's home recently (she has DVI out on her Dell computer, and HDMI inputs on her PAVV LCD TV). You will have no problems doing this, unless you run into a situation where HDCP is turned on.

My notebook has both VGA and S-video outs. The S-video can't pass as high of a signal as VGA (and VGA's quality is better). The S-video works well on a standard definition TV.

On another note, I can use my PS3 to play regular DVDs. Previously, I was using my computer to output the movies through the VGA cable, into the VGA input on my TV. It did quite well, and upscaled perfectly.

The PS3 doesn't upscale as well as the computer does, but it produces a lot better color and deepr blacks. The PS3 doesn't include an upscaler (neither does the XBox360), or at least not a good one, so I see verticle scanlines, which I assume are from my TV doing the upscaling internally (different TVs vary at this ability). If I sit back more than 2 meters, I can't notice these faint lines and rougher edges on text. The VGA/computer combination makes for a slightly clearer picture (no visible verticle scanlines or edges on text).

The quality of movie color is much better through the PS3/HDMI, and I usually sit back 2 meters or more to watch a movie, so I'm just going to use that for playback.

It is possible to connect a HDMI TV to a VGA cable/connector, however the result is not as good as a DVI-DVI or HDMI-HDMI connection due to the fact that the signals need to be converted from analog to digital. There are however convertors that can produce better conversions and even output to QXGA (20481536), though I have some doubts over their claim for sustaining video quality over long distance.

My older monitor supported 25601600 resolution which you had to use dual link DVI (2 connectors) and a special video card. A hefty investment indeed (if one can call it that).
