this weekend i tried whale meat while eating at the big fish market in busan. it's expensive as hell and not really all that good, but an interesting experience anyway. there were several different cuts of whale: red meat near the stomach, thick blubber, and fin. the red meat part tasted a bit like liver. the blubber was as fatty as you would imagine it to be. the fin was hard and oily. the aftertaste and smell sticks with you for a long time. it really tasted like a mix of fish and meat.
definitely not something i want to eat again, but i'll try almost anything once.
i was told that it's illegal to deliberatly catch them, but if they happen to get caught in the net, then it's okay to haul them in.
anyone else ever try it? did you like it? |

If the whale is caught then might as well use its meat than let it waste away. Do you have a fundamental problem with that? |

I have a problem with people creating a market for killing endangered animals. There are plenty of delicious animals to eat. |

I didn't realize ALL 100+ species of whales were endangered.
Thats news to me.
The OP didn't specify the type of whale he had, so I wouldn't jump to conclusions and accuse him of eating humpback whales or some other endangered species. |

the fishermen compare catching a whale to winning the lottery. it would seem pretty obvious to other fishmen and officials if the whale was caught intentionally or by accident. it would be pretty difficult to bait krill or whatever tiny things whales eat. so to catch it intentionally, i guess you would have to harpoon it. so if the whale's got a big hole in it, then the fishermen would be in trouble. if it's just all cut up from the nets, then the fishermen have hit gold. |

This is a good point. OP: Was the meat label as a certain species? |

So let it rot?
Nobody is creating a market. They are simply using meat that would simply rot otherwise. Whats the problem? |

i asked but the guys at the market weren't sure. it looked like a rather small whale based on the amount of fat from the skin to the red meaty interior. i would think that large whales would have a very thick layer of fat. the fat of the whale i ate was only around 2 inches thick.
i didn't get to see the whole animal, just a chunk of it. |

If it was caught by accident, then there's no harm in using it. But, if the whale was caught deliberately and is endangered or protected due to low population numbers, buying it only reinforces a market for the whale and threatens them more. |

I did laugh at this
I also agree with Jinju. Assumptions should not be made right away. It might not be an endangered species. |

i shared a plate of whale with some other teachers in Jinhae this past weekend during the cherry blossom festival.
probably the most disgusting thing i've eaten yet. the blubber was like eating concentrated butter that had gone off.
wasn't able to find out what kind of whale it was.
good to have experienced it though... |

I knew a Korean restaurant that had whale on the menu. Not their main food, and often not available.
The owner speaks English well, and told me that (at least a lot of it) comes from beached whales.
The in-laws did serve whale at a big family gathering one time, too. Interesting eating. |

Korea has the largest "accidental" bycatch in the world that it could almost be called careless. Its almost equal to what Japan deliberately takes.
Fact is on the surface they claim whaling to be non existent here, but then they go and cover every inch of korean waters with permanent driftnets that drowns everything passing through. Most whale catches are deliberate here. Its a hidden underbelly of the society here and they'll deny it exists. But by creating a market and tourist resort built around whalemeat, and by not banning its sale, they have put the whole extinction of whales forward a gear.
There was an undercover investigation that randomly DNA tested whalemeat for sale at Ulsan. Something like 80% of it was from species that are either critically endangered or supposedly protected, and most of it labelled as something it wasn't. Koreans would kill and eat pandas if they could: nothing is sacred when theres cash to be made- although they are concerned about their national image.
There is no need to be eating whales in this day and age. Go get yourself a sandwich or something instead. |
