I remember that back in a former Republican presidential leadership race (I think it was two federal elections ago) John McCain was a frontrunner and enjoying popular support. Then he started turning up the volume on his calls for campaign finance reform. You know, the notion that putting limits on election contributions and spending would reduce big business' influence over governmental policy and law-making decisions (see Iraq). In fact, he began to make campaign reform a major (if not the main) part of his nomination platform, suggesting it was the critical step for any real, positive change in America. I guess you know what happened next.
Shortly thereafter (and I mean within a few weeks), he was a political leper among the rich and powerful, and he fell off the radar within the Republican Party. I guess he learned his lesson cuz I don�t hear him yelling about campaign finance reform anymore. And he certainly seems to be towing the party line (read big business) like a good little puppet.
Despite McCain's drastic change, he will not become the Republican nominee for President, ever. I�m sure the key party members with power and influence who like the status quo, will not soon forget his calls for elections that represent the will of the ppl, instead of the will of major campaign contributors.
Big money wins elections, not ideology. The money that wins the election gets a voice in government; we do not. Sorry John, nobody with power/money is going to let you change that simple formula.

What d'ya mean, "we?" Unless you have dual citizenship, you're using the wrong pronoun, Eugene Debs.
I wouldn't count McCain out. He's savvy, he has name recognition, he's a bonafide war veteran, he's mature rather than rash in judgment, he's genuine, and he has earned respect from leaders of Congress on both sides of the aisle. But he will have to work hard for it. |
