Chinese Premier Hopes for FTA With Korea 'Soon'
| Quote: |
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday expressed hope that Korea and China will negotiate a free trade agreement as soon as possible. Wen made the remark in a meeting with Korean correspondents based in Beijing ahead of his Korea visit on April 10. "The question of an FTA between the two countries is now at a research stage, Wen said. But I hope that the two countries will make progress in this as soon as possible."
Wen also touched on discussions of a peace treaty to replace the armistice on the Korean Peninsula, now underway between the two Koreas, the U.S. and China. "No peace framework has been created on the Korean Peninsula. This is a legacy of the Cold War, he said. Creating one will be of help to the independent, peaceful reunification of the two Koreas." Asked about Beijings "Northeast Project," which Korea says is an attempt by Beijing to co-opt early Korean history, he said, "We need to make a distinction between academic research and politics. There is no territorial dispute between China and South Korea." That essentially reiterates previous statements that it is necessary to prevent the Northeast Project from becoming a political and diplomatic hot potato between the two countries.
