Hi all. I've lived in Asia for several years, so I've visited most of the normal holday destinations (Korea, China, Thailand). This summer I want to visit someplace I've never been before. I was looking at Bali, but a colleague from New Zealand tells me that after the 9/11 attacks, Australians and Kiwis were discouraged from travelling to Indonesia due to the terrorist events there. Does anyone have recent travel experience in Indonesia, particularly Bali? Anyone with either positive or negative experiences are invited to post. Thanks in advance. |

I went to Bali a few years back, didn't think it was that great but went to Gili Island on advice from another teacher....paradise. Other people I met were planning on traveling around Indo. another week or two but decided to stay there. Oh...and the magic mushroom milkshake/cola/tea ain't bad either

Was there last November and it is a pretty sad state of affairs it is a virtual ghost town now and the people are really hurting economically from the lack of tourism the constant "Hello Taxi" is almost too much to bear but these people have really had their way of life taken from them with the bombings. I had a taxi driver who had one customer in the past 7 days. That being said you can get some pretty nice discounts on hotel rooms because they are so desperate for your business.
I should add that the people of Bali are some of the nicest people you will ever meet anywhere in the world and Bali is still a great place to vacation. The food, beaches shopping nightlife , trips to surrounding islands like Lombok and cultural religious stuff around the island are definitely worth it. Yea another bomb could go off at any moment but that's just the way it is. |

I'm not a Westerner but I visited Bali in September last year. Yes, business was down after the 2005 bombing, but authorities have stepped up crackdowns on terrorists.
I went on the offseason so it wasn't as crowded as the summer, but Bali was slowly recovering. Please go and discover it for yourself, as many Westerners have. |

Bali is great...Ive spent a few months there..In my opinion..tis very SAFE for westerners. KUta Bali can be a real touristy fullon place, and isnt everyones cup of tea..great for lotsa party. BUt there are plenty of other spots to go to..check out Indonesia lonely planet guide. I spent most of my time in the South OF LOMbok..in another place also named KUTA..but quite unspoilt, very peaceful, basic, traditional, with white sandy beaches almost void of travelers...
and Bali is mighty cheap for great food, accomadations, shopping etc |
