From the same article:
'For example, South Korea has the world's highest ratio of cosmetic surgeons to citizens, catering to the legions of girls who receive eyelid surgery as a present for their 16th birthday.'

Here's something else from that article that I found interesting.
Quote: |
Despite his rare glimpse of the prison guards and knowledge of what they did, Park says he finds it difficult to raise awareness about the little-known gulags of North Korea among his classmates in Seoul. Most do not care, he says. Or worse, they take a pro-North Korea stance.

Hate to be Homeresque (seriously), but don't you think the principal might have been referring to the fact that westerners aren't hung up on the whole bowing, confucian deference to elders/authority, 존댓말 garbage?
Sometimes this board reminds me of those whinny gyopos, taking every little thing white people do and say as a direct offense against them. They're seeking that offense so vigilantly that they are sure to find it.
Korea has a terribly racist culture, but I don't think this is a very glaring example. |

Well alright, but our standards of how we expect people to treat us do drop in Korea, it's quite easy to lose your perception of your own status in society, some would say we are peripheral at best, just not included. While this quote, translated, is probably mostly referring to the confucian filial deference stuff and how to handle it with North Koreans - it is nonetheless still intrinsically xenophobic, because we are not afforded the same respect as Korean elders / persons in authority. In other Asian countries foreigners are simply treated like other people, no differently - if you are older, they show you more respect, just like in most countries. Korea is a country that simply doesn't apply it's normal social standards to foreigners on the whole, and that's not right either mate.
This quote is not as bad as people are making out it is, but it yet another example of how totally weird a big part of Korean society is with foreigners. |

We mostly agree. However, that Koreans (generally) don't apply their social standards to me allows me the luxury of not being deferential to the largely arbitrary elements of those standards. I mean, if you want to be treated equally, then clearly you should act in an equal manner, right? Screw that. I don't know what sensible person who isn't a male in his fifties would want to behave and be treated like a Korean.
I'd rather be respected in the western way than being "respected" the Korean way. I don't care that they're terribly xenophobic (and they largely are), as long as they're not intentionally impolite (and they're generally not). |

Well I think that generally, overall, you probably are pretty respectful to your elders, and people in positions of authority - we all do for the most part. I really don't like the idea that Korea is unique in this respect, because it isn't. But they have certain ceremony of deference, in which we are not included. Being outside that system, often means that you get treated either like you are not important, or that you are an object of mirth. Like when you get big hoards of middle school kids shouting 'hello' and falling about in fits of giggles. They would never do this to a Korean man in a suit in his early thirties. Never. Korea's weird. |
