"It's not always clear to us whether a 3-D simulation of a casino is the same thing as a casino, legally speaking, and it's not clear to the law enforcement authorities we have asked," Yoon said.
The FBI isn't actually investigating. The headline makes it seem more dire. But it's an interesting issue. Gambling is a game based on random chance + skill. Computer games are based on random chance + skill. In such games these days you can parley random chance + skill into items of value that people will pay cash money for.
Going into Yahoo Games and playing poker and getting a high ranking is not gambling, per se. But someone might be willing to pay you money for your ID so they can pretend to be the top Texas Hold 'Em champ. Just as someone might pay to take over your Level 49 Elf Lord. Is either gambling?
If I put out a whack-a-mole game in front of my pub and change your points into things you can sell on ebay, is this gambling? Yes. World of Warcraft is certainly a virtual version of whack-a-mole. |

Here I thought you were talking about those virtual worlds that people can live in online... where they have a character that walks around through a city, meets friends, and does stuff. |
