I found Samee on the streets last June, a couple weeks after I arrived. One of his hind legs was shattered, he had an eye infection, skin infection, hip dysplasia, and pieces of rubber and lot of other stuff matted into his hair. After 8 months in a cast, numerous surgeries (and neutering ), and daily vet visits for physiotherapy (although he still needs to build some muscle in that leg he didn't use for about a year) he's a happy and extremely loyal dog. Housetrained from the minute I brought him in, I find he's very sensitive to the sound of my voice making him easy to train and command. My original plan was to take him home to Canada with me. Then I decided to stay in Korea for an extra year and that wouldn't have been a problem, however there's going to be a one to two month gap in between my contracts, and as I am going to be crashing on at least a dozen couches across North America during the summer it wouldn't be fair (or affordable) to bring him along with me. I finish in Incheon on June 18th, and am going to go to Busan in August. If I could get someone to just watch him for the period of time I am gone that would work out the most in my favor, but I'm realistic and know it would be easier to find him a good home if it's a permanent home. I also think it would be less stress for Samee to not have to be moved back and forth between owners too many times. I live in Incheon, and will help transport him and all his stuff (bed, bowls, leashes, food) to whoever offers him a good home either permanently or temporarily. I have tons of pictures, there's some below. If you're interested or able to help in any way please send me a PM.
This picture is when I brought Samee home after a bone marrow transplant. The vets removed some bone from his front shoulder to fill in the bone laceration of his broken leg
This is Samee in one of his many casts
And, yah I did it...he was COLD!

I don't think that your dog will have problems staying with someone for a month or two - what matters is that YOU rescued him and he will ALWAYS be loyal to you. I would say to get a dog-sitter to help you, and then take him back when you have settled in Busan, otherwise you might regret giving him up, cos you spent so much time, money and energy, not to mention love, on him. |

Interesting perspective but no, how could I ever regret getting his leg fixed and possibly saving his life? I used to work at the Humane Society in Toronto and I understand the stress that dogs experience when having to constantly change owners...but separation anxiety was stronger in the shelter dogs behavior because they couldn't socialize with people for the majority of the hours they spend in a cage. Samee just needs someone who will love him, and being a dog will be "loyal" to whoever feeds him. |

Ms. Amber,
I wish we could...but wifey put a kibash on my hope to dog sit for you. We've ample space, friendly pooch companion (who's also gimpy), and loads of free time. Problem is is that we are not sure of our holiday plans this summer.
If you do not get a helper/taker nearer the time of departure...PM me to see if our plans will allow it!
Good luck,
Ryst |

Awwwh, the thought of Samee playing with another "gimpy" dog...I'll be sure to PM, if a home hasn't been found, when it gets closer to summer for your travel plan updates. Thanks a lot! |

I have had dogs all my life. Just touches me what you did. I will consider taking him for the time you are gone. Can't promise right now, as two problems I would have to think about.
1. I would be afraid of getting attached and having to give him back.
2. If I were to keep him I am not sure what I am doing in the future and wouldn't want to put your generosity for this dog at risk.
Let me sleep on it and I'll let you know if I'll take him only while you're gone. Wish I could be more definitive right now. |
