my music machine died and i'm all broken up about it.
i have a couple of replacement options, but i can't decide what to do about it.
1. i bought it in canada and it has a full refund warranty. my wife will be here in 10 days and she can bring me a new one and i can give her the old one to get the money back. this way i can be sure that the software will be in english, and if it outlasts my stay in korea, i can always return it when it finally kicks it as well. of course this means no music for 10 days except for when i'm home.
2. buy one here. i'll have music much sooner. what about software though, can i get it in english? and will i be able to return it and get my money back when it finally succumbs?
what say you?

Depends what you want I guess. If you just want something with less than 1G of memory, you might as well buy it here since they are cheap enough and you don't have to wait. If you were after some top of the line mp3 player, then you might as well get the English software and the warranty so you can enjoy it to the fullest. Or you could do both buy the cheapest Korean mp3 player for the 10 days and have your wife bring you the best one she can find. |

why do you need software with an MP3 player? It's just drag and drop. |

Just so you know, most major brands of MP3 players here have English language options available on both the player and the software. Not default, but as an option it's usually availabe. I'm not sure which, but I know iPods and Samsung Yepps (certain models, anyway) have it. SO, that doesn't have to be a major factor, depending on what you're looking for.
Of course, it IS only ten days... You could always hum your favorite ditties to yourself for the time being? |

I'd consider waiting - a break from the portable tunes makes them so much more fresh when you get them back. And the warranty thing - why not? Hum and ponder the arrival of your wife... |

thanks for the advice.
so i'm gonna get one here, cause i can't wait any longer! i guess i'll pick one up this weekend.
as for the warranty, she can bring the old one home with her and get it refunded, so either way the money comes back. she also doesn't have time to go shopping for me, exams are in full swing.
kimchi story, are you crazy? wait the whole time and go music free? impossible...

If you buy one here, you'll at least get the choice of choosing the model and color yourself.
Personally, I prefer a cd player because they have better sound. |

dev if i had a cd player i'd have to carry around a hell of a lot of cd's. mp3 players allow me to have thousands of songs at my disposal.
kimchi story, i'll probably go to yongsan, i like the vibe better...

The people who write the codecs that encode mp3 etc use blind testing techniques on high end audio gear. They have extensive training in hearing compression artifacts that occur when you move from lossless, like the wav files on a cd, to lossy codecs, like mp3.
They generally cant tell the difference between 192kb/s vbr mp3 and the lossless such as you get from a cd player. I have done some testing of my own ability to perceive such artifacts and generally cant at 128kb/s and above. I have never been able to tell which is the .wav file and the mp3 file at 192kb/s.
Most mp3 players now will also play flac, and other lossless codecs. This means the audio data is exactly the same as that on a cd. So the only possible difference is the hardware.
While mp3 players were sub-par in that area the later models have as good if not better digital to analogue converters as portable cd players. The iPods and a couple of others use a Wolfson chip which is excellent.
So I think the audio quality on new mp3 players (from good brands) is as good as, if not better than portable CD players. The mp3 players have the added advantage of huge capacity. I have over 700 albums on my iPod and it still has room for a few hundred more.

I suggest upgrading to a PMP (portable media player). Sony Istation is fantastic. You can store a ton of songs AND videos AND Pictures AND text files. I have a korean brand PMP and it will set you back about 250,000won. Not so bad for 30 gigs of lovin.

i only care about having portable music, i have no interest or desire to have portable video, pics or anything else. so 30 gigs would be great, as long as there wasn't a bunch of space being taken up by a video screen. pocket-sized is important.
