I'm planning on heading East at the end of August though I may be able to get out there for the beginning of August at a push.
Can anyone give me an idea of how long it roughly takes to complete the paperwork before you can start a contract i.e. what's the latest I can leave it (realistically) before starting in August?
I was thinking about 8 weeks, meaning that I'd need to find and sign a contract for a job by the end of May in order to start at the beginning of August. Is this realistic?
Also, being as August is the earliest I could start, will a lot of potential employers think that that's too far ahead to start making offers now? I have had some interest since posting my CV, but the email trail runs rather cold when I tell them I can't start until August. |

It takes 12-21 days after you sign on the dotted line to complete your paperwork if you plan to have your visa before you get here.
Sign the contract submit the HARDcopies of your documents via courier (4-7 days).
Employer applies for your visa confirmation number (4-6 days).
Employer e-mails you the visa confirmation number. (1-day).
You head for the nearest consuate to get your visa (2-6 days at the consulate).
Get to the airport and get on a plane (1 day).
12-21 days is typical for processing.
How long will it take you to search for a job?
Public school - 2 weeks AFTER you have your documents in order.
Hakwon - 2 days for the 1st offer to roll in. 10-30 days if you do proper research. |

and IMO
Regardless of how much "research" you do, you could still be walking into a Horrible hagwon. The contract is oh so subjective. Decide like 4-5 real sticking points that you want and then just live with the shittyness of the rest of your contract until you can get here and look for your next year job on your own. |

Talk to as many teachers - current and former - as you can. A lot of contracts look pretty the same. The devil is in the director. Almost literally.
Oh, and read all of ttompatz's posts and take his advice. |

I kid you not, from email response to ad on Daves to phone interview, to Visa application at Korean embassy at Home Country or even flying here without one and doing the Japan visa run - you could be here in your apt and with a job to start soon in as short as two weeks.
If you're sensible however, you'll wait a bit longer, pick out the better jobs, do your research (area / salaries / contracts / stuff about teaching / stuff about Korea and make sure you speak to any foriegn teachers currently working at the school you decide to go for.
If you're looking for a public school job I think the hiring time is around mid August to early Septemer for MOST but NOT ALL Schools.
Be warned - do your research and stay away from places like Wonderland, Ding dang dong or whatever / ECC etc..... |
