I was so sorry just now to learn about the death of this admirable woman. Those with an interest in Linguistics or the Middle East may know of her:

Quote:
Tanya Reinhardt dies age 63

By Haaretz Service

Linguist and left-wing activist Professor Tanya Reinhardt died in New York on Saturday at age 63.

Reinhardt, one of the most outspoken representatives of the radical Israeli left, was a fierce critic of the 1993 Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, saying they represented a perpetuation of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. She was also a proponent of an academic boycott of Israeli universities to protest the occupation.

After receiving a master's degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Reinhardt wrote her doctoral thesis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under renowned linguist Noam Chomsky.

Her contributions to linguistic theory dealt with the connection between meaning and context, and the interface between syntax and systems of sound.

From 1977, Reinhardt taught courses in linguistics and literature at Tel Aviv University, including classes in critical reading of media and the analysis of discourse based on Chomsky's methods.

For the last 15 years she also taught at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

In December 2006, Reinhardt left Israel and settled in New York to teach at New York University.

Reinhardt and those close to her said the change in the university's relationship to her was made in response to her statements calling for an academic boycott of Israel.

Reinhardt espoused the principle of non-violent resistance, and was among the leaders of the left-wing activists who called for boycotts of the 1996 and 2001 elections.

She was active in recent years in Israeli-Palestinian efforts against the West Bank separation fence and the seizure of land from Palestinians for its construction.

Reinhardt was married to poet and translator Aharon Shabtai.

I believe there is another professor on the Left in Israel of such caliber - the famous Ilan Pappe. I think they threatened to expel him. There was also some student who wrote about 1948 massacres (his surname was Cohen), and his dissertation was accepted, and it was based on facts, and then it was revoked. Tanya Reinhart was a very outspoken critic of the state's abuse of the Palestinians. Being a critic from within in any country is difficult, and it requires bravery. I am not sure about boycotting elections as she proposed. What would have that done for the Israeli Left?

Rest In Peace...

I hope your baby is all right, Big B.

Chomsky on Reinhart: http://www.counterpunch.org/reinhart03192007.html

Quote:
Tanya was a brilliant and creative scientist. I can express my own evaluation of her work most concisely by recalling that years ago, when I was thinking about the future of my own department after my retirement, I tried to arrange to offer Tanya the invitation to be my eventual replacement, plans that did not work out, much to my regret, mostly for bureaucratic reasons.

Quote:
She was one of the most courageous and honorable defenders of human rights whom I have ever been privileged to meet. As all honest people should, she focused her attention and energy on the actions of her own state and society, for which she shared responsibility including the responsibility, which she never shirked, to expose crimes of state and to defend the victims of repression, violence, and conquest.

I like that last quote, so I'll paste it again:

"As all honest people should, she focused her attention and energy on the actions of her own state and society, for which she shared responsibility including the responsibility, which she never shirked, to expose crimes of state and to defend the victims of repression, violence, and conquest."

So often people on this forum complain about posters pointing out the crimes of the West, and demand why they don't spend their time focusing on the crimes of other societies. The above quote sums up my response to that in a nutshell.

Wow! A ringing endorsement by Chomsky. On Counterpunch, no less. Talk about credible sources.

Talk about a total cop-out: focusing on your "own state only". I guess Canadian lefties have no business criticizing the US & Israel, by that "logic". I wonder if Chomsky, et al ever criticized the hordes of intellectuals who sang lick-spittle praises to Uncle Joe. Or those who think Fidel is such a passionate humanitarian? No? Thought not....

IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE Chomsky AND Reinhart ARENT/WEREN'T AFRAID TO FACE THE CONSEQUENCES OF MAKING THEIR OPINIONS GENERALLY KNOWN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC!!

I DON'T NECESSARILY AGREE WITH EVERYTHING CHOMSKY SAYS!! ONE FRIEND OF MINE ONCE SUMMED UP CHOMSKY'S OPINIONS WITH THE EXPRESSION: "ANALYSIS GREAT - PRESCRIPTION TERRIBLE"!!

BUT ONE THING YOU CAN CERTAINLY SAY FOR THEM, THEY BACK UP THEIR OPINIONS AND VIEWPOINTS WITH SOLID RESEARCH, AND IN THAT WAY THEY CONTRIBUTE TO RAISING THE QUALITY OF PUBLIC DISCUSSION OF PUBLIC POLICY ISSUES!!

CERTAINLY, THEY DON'T TAKE THE EASY, CONVENIENT OR SELF-SERVING OPTION OF SKUKLING ANONYMOUSLY ON SOME WEBSITE WHERE THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR OPINIONS!!

DID YOU GET THAT??!!! HELLO????

You were saying something about "mental patients" a while back, Manner.

Well, these days, you sound an awful lot like this guy to me...

He couldn't quite grasp the idea that the charge nurse couldn't make it be yesterday. She couldn't turn back time, thank you, Einstein! Now, *he* was nuts! *He* was a fruitcake, Jim...!

Sorry. Uh, sorry. I, I, I got a little agitated. The thought of, uh, escape had crossed my mind, and then suddenly - suddenly - suddenly I felt like bending the fucking bars back, and ripping out the goddamn window frames and eating them - yes, *eating* them! Leaping, leaping, leaping! Colonics for everyone! All right! You dumbasses. I'm a mental patient. I'm *supposed* to act out! Wait'll you morons find out who I am! My father's gonna be really upset, and when my father gets upset, the ground SHAKES! My father is God! I worship my father!

If you like, I will put it in all caps for you. However that may be, perhaps it is time to have a martini...? Wink

I don't have internet at home, and with a newborn plus a boisterous young 2 year old in tow you can imagine how difficult it is to a) get out of the house, b) slip into a libary or internet cafe on the occasions when I am able to get out of the house (naughty toddlers leaping and lolloping all over the other customers/babies screaming at the top of their lungs in libraries).

Jinju, I'll make a deal with you. Grow a pair of mammory glands and come around to mind my young children. You can sit for hours on end feeding baby and watching dreadful midday B movies and other mindnumbingly awful daytime TV like Dr Phil and his teary-eyed disfunctional friends, while my toddler practices WWF wrestling on you, (which often involves him diving from the top of the sofa down onto you while you desperately try to sheild the baby from his madcap brother - not too funny after the first couple of incidents). Don't forget to change their nappies, bathe them both and keep the place clean. In the meantime I will suddenly be free to go to an internet cafe or a library and enjoy a few hours cavorting on the CE forum. That would be nice. Otherwise, it's a waste of your time constantly calling out for me to play with you - it's going to be too much like one hand clapping.

Thanks Adventurer, my baby is doing really well. The nurse was quite impressed with his strength and his unusually good head control. He's very calm, and seems a rather serious little chap!

As for Ilan Pappe, I followed the hooha over him, and I think he is rather brave.

With the effort you took to write that, you could have said:

"I retract my support for Chavez. I was clearly mistaken, and his opponents were right. He is a totalitarian, and is running the country into the ground, just as BJWD and others said he would. I will not fall in love with another populist so quickly ever again. I have learned my lesson." That is all we want.
