When Andy Warhol said everyone would get their 15 minutes of fame, I don't think he had military personnel in mind. Then again, maybe he anticipated this crap.

I used to think the British high command expected decorum from the men and women in their ranks. Turns out no longer to be true:

Quote:
British sailors may sell their stories By JENNIFER QUINN, AP

The 15 British sailors and marines held by Iran for nearly two weeks were granted permission to sell their stories to the media, the Ministry of Defense said Sunday.

The move is a change from the military's usual policy of blocking serving personnel from entering into financial arrangements with media organizations. A Defense Ministry spokeswoman said the situation of the former captives is unique and deserved special consideration.

"In exceptional circumstances, such as the kind faced in recent days, permission can be granted by commanding officers and the MoD," she said on condition of anonymity, in line with government policy.

The Sunday Times reported that the only woman in the group, 26-year-old Leading Seaman Faye Turney, could earn as much as $300,000 from deals with a broadcaster and a newspaper.

Turney did not participate in a news conference on Friday. A detailed statement, agreed by all 15 crew members, was read out, and six of the crew answered questions from reporters. The statement said they were subjected to constant psychological pressure.

The crew included seven Royal Marines, who have agreed to pool their fees and split them evenly, sending 10 percent to a military benevolent fund, both the Sunday Times and Sunday Telegraph said. The rest of the captured crew was made up of Royal Navy sailors, including Turney, who will "likely" be allowed to keep their fees, the Sunday Times said....

The Iranian propaganda machine will have a field day if and when one of the ex-hostages caves in to the temptation. Before you know it Turney will have her own show on the BBC.

Where's the sense of honour in this? Or doesn't that matter anymore?

Did the article metion what exactly the military thought was so exceptional about these circumstances?

Stupid Brits, man are they honourless. Now their American counterparts show much more tact, eh Stevieboy?

Oh thats right, not only do US soldiers get in on the hype machine, their own chickenhawk administration tries to spin it into something patriotic instead of it being a bunch of fools who can't read a map properly.

The truth is you guys are all water-carriers for your political affiliations.

When I was in the Navy, I was detained and tortured by the United States Marines.

I was stationed in Alaska--the Allution Islands. I went tundra hopping one day when the sun was out. The sun was hardly ever out.

On the other side of the island, there was supposedly all kinds of sea lions. I wanted to see them. Snap a few pictures to send back to Mom. That kind of thing.

I walked to the wrong place. I ended up somewhere that was top secret. There weren't any signs saying Don't Walk Here!

Some Marine jumped out of nowhere. He hit me with the butt of his rifle. He fractured my ribs. I was then detained and questioned for several hours while sucking for air.

After they realized I wasn't a threat to my country, they let me see a doctor.

It was scary. And those guys were on my side.

Point? The Brits wanted to survive. They shouldn't have been in that position in the first place. There was a British destroyer that could have blown the Iranians out of the water.

Nevertheless, they were afraid and didn't want to die. They didn't give up any secrets, and they lived. Good for them.

I think the selling of a story is dishonourable. They are to make hundreds of thousands of dollars for doing their duty? It makes the duty of serving in the armed forces of Britain so cheap in the eyes of some.
I find it to be an insult to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in Alamein, World Wars I and II, and Desert Storm and currently serve.
Is there a monetary price for serving? It seems to make whatever charges Britain had against Iran look very weak now. I strongly disapprove, and I know many British in uniform also disapprove.

I think what happened was that Faye Turney had already sold her story to the press, and then the government said it was okay.

You greasy little creep, the closest you've ever been to the military was shopping for wife-beaters in an Old Navy store.

You are a troll and a habitual liar, but try not to dishonor the military you claim to support like you did a few years ago when you were pretending to be that guy who served in Somalia.

Hey, I respect my military and wasn't denegrating anybody except those who sell their story. Stevie was attacking the Brits when we all know no one sells out fatser than a Yank!

And Wrench my dear boy, this board is full of armchair generals, mohagony bomber pilots and chickenhawks, but I am not not of them. They should never have been there, I didn't believe the "intelligence", and I think they should pull out tomorrow. Ask stevie, jinju, joo goop, and the others what they think, those are the generals you seek.

Won't they be disappointed that it was only a two-week ordeal. Just imagine the money they could have raked in had it lasted months or even a year or two!

IO doubt there is enough meat in their story to warrant a six figure sum or entertain readers for longer than 10 minutes or so.

Or "faster." And how do we spell mahogany? Oh, do divulge when the U.S. High Command authorized military personnel in harm's way to sell their stories to the media? Waiting....

NOW TRY TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE, SIDE-SWIPING LEFTISTS:

In the past couple of days the former British Army chief publicly decried the situation and spokesmen for several British families who lost husbands and sons in actual combat in southern Iraq have come forward to criticize the media deal and point out how utterly unfair it is.

So what do you have to say to them Dave-of-a-nondescript-suburb-of-Milwaukee-that-happen'-town and Octavius Maximus Error?

Can't you say the same thing about Jessica Lynch, the famous POW that was lauded by the administration?

Where's the honor of always posting partisan messages? What have you done lately?
