Overheard in the teacher's lounge:

Korean guy teacher (to foreign guy teacher): This is Julie. She is ten years old. When she is- what do you say- legal age, I will marry her."

Foreign guy teacher: (uncomfortable laughter) Ehhh... congratulations.

Now I've got no reason to believe this guy's strange interaction with children goes anywhere beyond awkward, digusting jokes. But how much less creepy is this than it would be in a Western country?

My own Chester-the-molester moment happened later on that day:

12 year old female student: Teacher, how old are you?

Me: 25.

Student: When do you get married?

Me: I didn't know I was getting married. Do you have someone for me? (Oh, wait, she's 12 years old. That's disgusting and really inappropriate. Gotta cover, gotta cover). I mean, older friends. Much older. Maybe a sister? (Nice. Nice cover).

My imagined reason for the slip-up? She asked an adult question and I, unthinkingly, answered her the way I would an adult. My deep-seated, psychological reason for the slip-up? Ugh, I really don't want to know.

The only thing I see that's inappropriate is your title of this thread.

(Not to say it's not humorous...)

Maybe the teacher was just trying to work positively with a ten year old girl's first crush so that he doesn't poison her views of men for the next 25 years.

I mean, what could possibly happen? He might get a few flowery notes in class and have his picture taken, joke about marrying her a few times, and then next month she's over him. No harm no foul. And most importantly, no actions required of him.

I'm not saying the guy should be arrested or even disciplined. But it's still inappropriate and creepy. My point of telling my own story was that he might not have been deliberately inappropriate and creepy anymore than I was.

Mateomiguel, what if she doesn't have a crush on him?

It's a good thing there's no white guys saying inappropriate and creepy things to their students anywhere.

Speaking of which, one of my memories of last year was reading on some ESL site (can't remember the name). It was an area where you could ask free legal advice from a couple foreign lawyers in Korea. One guy posed a question that went something like this:

"What's the legal age in Korea? I've kissed some middle school girls, and I was curious."

The lawyer responded with: "What the fvck is wrong with you?" He then went on to explain how incredibly stupid this guy was, and how grossly unethical the things he was doing were.

It would have been pretty funny, if not for the fact that it's actually happening somewhere.

Best legal advice I've ever heard, despite not answering the original question.

Isn't the age of consent in Korea only 13
I presume their must be some sort of age gap rules though or there would be more nonces out here.

That expression needs to be changed with all the shaving and bikini waxing that goes on these days.
