From the Korea Times ...
Mobile Phone Passenger Booked for In-Flight Use
| Quote: |
A woman has been booked on charges of using a mobile phone while in flight. This is the first case that a plane passenger has been criminally charged with the offence in Korea.
The 35 year-old lady, Park, made the call to her company colleague on a plane leaving from Seoul to Pusan on Friday afternoon.
She continued the call for about five minutes, although cabin attendants tried to stop her. She didnt listen to them.
Another passenger who was worried about possible danger caused by Kims disturbance also complained and the two quarreled. The annoyed passenger reported Parks wrongdoings to the police.
Kim was arrested by Pusan Kangso police and was indicted without detention on charges of violating the Aviation Safety Law.
The law bans passengers from using electronic gadgets as they could affect the operation of the plane. Violators can be fined up to five million won.
Although the amount of the fine has not been decided yet, Parks case is expected to alert passengers of the dangers of using mobile phones while on a flight. |
Good. |

| Good it's about time they enforced the rules. I remember being on a flight from Korea to Canada and the Korean man lit up a smoke TWO different times in the bathroom and all the flight attendant did was politley tell him not to do it again. He ignored her even though she was Korean. If that kind of situation ever happens again, I swear I'll punch the !@#%$ in the face! |

I thought that because mobile phones use a different frequency (and bandwidth, than navigation and radar, then it is not such a problem. I wonder what frequency the aircraft's air-land customer phones use.
The difference in frequency between radar and mobile phones is in the GHz's. It's a wide gap. Bandform of air to air coms are FM frequencies rather than UHF of a phone...
It would mean the operators of aircraft are being extremely cautious to disallow the use of mobile phones in the aircraft. I guess we need to feel cautious all the time while in the air.
I'd really like the airlines to close down on steep banks, turbulence runs, 'scared as I am' flight attendants, irregular aircraft maintenance, visual landings on cloudy days, 'no problem mate' pilots, overworked and tired pilots, scattered scheduling for pilots etc.
Low frequency LF 5 30300 kHz
10 km 1 km Navigation, time signals, AM longwave broadcasting
Medium frequency MF 6 3003000 kHz
1 km 100 m AM (Medium-wave) broadcasts
High frequency HF 7 330 MHz
100 m 10 m Shortwave broadcasts, amateur radio and over-the-horizon aviation communications
Very high frequency VHF 8 30300 MHz
10 m 1 m FM, television broadcasts and line-of-sight ground-to-aircraft and aircraft-to-aircraft communications
Ultra high frequency UHF 9 3003000 MHz
1 m 100 mm television broadcasts, microwave ovens, mobile phones, wireless LAN, Bluetooth, and Two-Way Radios such as FRS and GMRS Radios
Super high frequency SHF 10 330 GHz
100 mm 10 mm microwave devices, wireless LAN, most modern Radars
Extremely high frequency EHF 11 30300 GHz
10 mm 1 mm Radio astronomy, high-speed microwave radio relay
And, there should be a smoking room on board. Heck, I'll clean the room myself after the flight. |

On my last trip back from Canada (last June) a guy was lighting up in the bathroom, set off the smoke alarm, and dashed out of the bathroom before the FA got there. He was ratted out, then the FA wanted him to come with her, and he refused by heaping on the abusive language. Co-pilot (?) came down with a male FA and strong-armed him to the front of the plane. He was met by Narita's finest at our stopover in Japan. Laughed myself silly. |
