Does anyone remember how the US supported the Khmer Rouge in the Cambodian-Vietnamese war?

Right. The Vietnamese Communist Party did it first so it's OK. Is that what you're trying to tell us, Joo?

1. I hate Pol Pot
2. Henry Kissinger had his finger in that pie too (US foreign policy in Cambodia). He was also an advisor for the current mess in Iraq. Someone should demand he hand back his Nobel Peace Prize!
3. Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1979, & ousted Pol Pot, much to Chinas' chagrin. China & Vietnam went to war not long after. The civil war in Cambodia continued until about 2000. I visited in January 2003.

No, I just think it is fair to put it in perspective. Don't you agree?

Indeed. Do you think US bombing may also have had a part to play in the rise of the Khmer Rouge?

And, of course, the Vietnamese only gave support before the democide. The US continued that support afterwards.

I think think the following is accurate (please feel free to fix it if it is not) :

The US didn't support Pol Pot while the killing fields were going on.
Futhermore while the US supported a coaltion that included the Khmer Rouge of elements of it , Vietnam gave direct support to the Khmer Rouge during the Vietnam war.

I don't think there is any need of "only" here. and it is a waste of time to argue who is more guilty.

Well, the absolute lion's share of guilt goes directly to the Khmer Rouge and China. I just think it quite sad that the US valued realpoliticking with China against Vietnam over the people of Cambodia, and that Vietnam, which did the most of any party to stop the killing, is still often blamed for it. I think that this is worth remembering.

Ok, I agree but Vietnam went into Cambodia for strategic reasons not humanitarian. Another US screw up during the cold war. Now that I think about it the US was wrong to oppose Vietnams invasion of Cambodia.

Mind if I if move the topic.

Now Saddam Hussein was at least 30% as bad as Pol Pot. So why is the US wrong for behaving like Vietnam did and invading Iraq for strategic reasons?
