Suppose you're living in the Philippines (not as a tourist), how much would you need to spend per month to live a nice life?
I just mean having a semi-decent apartment, going out to eat a good bit, hitting the bars on the weekend, and generally living in comfort. And is a car necessary?
Also, what about Thailand? sorry, a lot of questions |

Not sure about the Philippines, but I bet it's similar to Thailand. If you're living on around $1000 a month in Bangkok, you're doing alright, have a decent apartment and live just fine. $2000 and you're having fun, eating out, drinking etc. $3000 you're doing a lot of naughty stuff. $4000+ and you're a debauched maniac.
Seriously though, it's dirt cheap for most necessities and to live similar to the locals (like even $500 or less is enough if you're really frugal), but if you want a luxury apartment and all the fixings it's similar to Western countries (i.e. pricey), just a better bargain. |

I have a friend who lives and works in the Phils. He pays about $300US a month for a two bedroom house in a gated neighborhood. You could get a NICE single apartment for that or a little more. He doesn't cook for himself at all and eats western food. Figure $2-7 per meal, eating western, depending on how touristy your area is. If you drink San Miguel its cheap, like $1 a beer. He has a cheap scooter which he rides around on. I've seen that you can rent them pretty cheap. I wouldn't say you need a car. Jeepney's are ridiculously cheap once you figure out the system. He claims hs living expenses are about $1000-1200 a month, and he lives well. But he is also frugal in many practical areas. I've heard that for $2000 a month, you can live VERY well in the Philippines. I don't know about Thailand. |

It depends on where you are and what you're going to be doing there. I work here. I live there. For a month, you should get a furnished apartment. When I'm there, I usually head out in the evneing for a night of shooting pool with my wife and drinking as much beer as possible. 5 nights a week. Paying for dinner, my wifes drinks (non-alcoholic), my 15-25 beers, and our pool games over 7 or 8 hours runs anywhere from 1500-2500 pesos. So 33 to 55 US? Gets expensive over a month, but thats kind of extreme. If you meet a girl, life can get very expensive indeed....as in any country. |

I don't know about Thailand but I can tell you from personal experience in the Philippines (Cebu City) that you can do that for about $600 or so U.S dollars a month. Of course that depends on how much you eat out and hit the bars as well as go shopping (for clothes and other items). A car is not absolutely necessary...but it is nice.
However if you have a g/f there, be prepared to budget around a $1000 or so per month.... |
