So I'm thinking of getting an LCD HDTV within a month or two when I can afford it. I've been looking around, but I'm a bit confused because the brand names here are nothing I've ever heard of. I go into the Samsung shop but all they're selling are tvs with brands like PAVV, XCanvas, and Summus. The only Samsung tvs they have in there are complete crap. Same with LG, and the same when I went into Homeplus (although Homeplus had the best prices). What the hell are these tvs? It says Samsung on the sign but on the actual tv it says Pavv.

Those are just the model names of the Tvs. Pavv is Samsung, xCanvas is LG, not sure about Summus.

Does Costco sell HDTV's here? I've never been to the Costco in Korea, but I know in the US, they sold the Vizio Plasma TV's that were freaking awesome for the price.

Yes, Costco does sell them. No, there aren't any special deals there, because Korea blocks good prices. Mostly, they have PAVV.

Your best deals are probably in Yongsan at ETLand.

I am a fan of the newer PAVV monitors (made by Samsung). Just helped someone buy one recently. I own a 42" LG XCanvas.

Some hints...

Don't bother splurging on 1080p. 1080i is plenty good enough (1366x768 resolution -- DO NOT get 1024x768 resolution). You can go with PDP or LCD -- whichever tickles your fancy. If you have a fair amount of light streaming in, then go with LCD (PDP is darker, but looks great when the room is darker).

Make sure your monitor has at least a 10,000 to 1 contrast ratio, and if you get an LCD, also be sure to see what the thing looks like turned on with a black video signal, if possible (to see if the screen does not show a uniform black level when black). My LCD has a sort of bright spot in the middle of the left edge, and it drives me insane. I can pretty much only see it when I'm viewing standard-def material and it's not stretched, but it still drives me nuts. I haven't called LG on this yet -- I should soon.

Thanks for the info. I live in Busan, so Yongsan is pretty much out of the question, but there are plenty of stores around that sell the Pavv models which look fantastic. I'm gunning for a 32" -- lowest I've seen is around a million, although I didn't look at any of the specs --- not really sure how because I don't read Korean (yet).

Costco has SAMSUNG HDTV CRT model, 32inch, native 720p, going for under 700,000 won. I've had mine for a while now and I love it. Its not that bulky either for a CRT set. Amazing picture, and I use it alot for HD gaming with my XBOX 360.

I would really recommend it... good HD picture... cheap price.

LG 32LX1 is a really good 32" LCD. Should come in around your budget at 1 000 000. Cheapest price online is actually 900 000.
Recommended!

I have sold TV's for the last 9 years, and I prefer LG to most other brands, with the exception of Panasonic, which you cant really get in here.

But my best tip would be to go into your local Himart, compare a few models around your budget, see which picture you like the best, post the model nr. here, and we will let you know if the price ok before you buy.

1080i vs. 1080p HDTV: should you care?

Why 1080p is theoretically better than 1080i
1080i, the former king of the HDTV hill, actually boasts an identical 1,920x1,080 resolution but conveys the images in an interlaced format (the i in 1080i). In a tube-based television, otherwise known as a CRT, 1080i sources get "painted" on the screen sequentially: the odd-numbered lines of resolution appear on your screen first, followed by the even-numbered lines--all within 1/30 of a second. Progressive-scan formats such as 480p, 720p, and 1080p convey all of the lines of resolution sequentially in a single pass, which makes for a smoother, cleaner image, especially with sports and other motion-intensive content. As opposed to tubes, microdisplays (DLP, LCoS, and LCD rear-projection) and other fixed-pixel TVs, including plasma and LCD flat-panel, are inherently progressive in nature, so when the incoming source is interlaced, as 1080i is, they convert it to progressive scan for display.

What content is available in 1080p?
Really, nothing at this point. Today's high-def broadcasts are done in either 1080i or 720p, and there's little or no chance they'll jump to 1080p any time soon because of bandwidth issues. Meanwhile, some newly announced DVD players from Denon and NeuNeo (who?) are claiming to upconvert standard DVD movies to 1080p resolution, but that's a far cry from native high-def content. More promising is the post-DVD future. There's been a lot of chatter over whether the new breed of high-def movie players, Blu-ray or HD-DVD, as well as the upcoming Sony PlayStation 3, will output in 1080p. Allegedly, they will, but those players and recorders will be very expensive at first (more than $1,000), and they probably won't hit more modest price levels until 2007 or even 2008. The PS3, on the other hand, is designed to be more of a mainstream product; we hope that means a price tag in the neighborhood of $500. It's unclear, however, exactly what it will output in 1080p--games, Blu-ray movies, or both--or neither.

This information is well over a year old. In the HD world, that is a lifetime.

I have a 1080p TV and a PS3. It does output video in 1080p, and my LG XCanvas accepts it as 1080p. I own the Casino Royal Blu-Ray disk, and have downloaded about 10 Blu-Ray trailers from the Sony PS3 online store in full 1080p as well.

Save your money and go with 1080i on any TV 42" or smaller, for sure. A 50" 1080p is gonna be way out of the average teacher's price range anyway. 1080i looks stunning anyway.

If you are set on buying a BR player, then getting a PS3 is currently one of the best players you can get. Seriously. It plays with better quality than most of the standalone players, and costs half as much as what you can buy a Samsung BR player for in Korea. The PS3 loads BR disks faster, and looks better than any other 1st generation player (although the new Samsung BD-P1200 is said to be a great 2nd gen player). DO NOT GET A SAMSUNG BD-P1000 player, though. It is the older first-gen model, and has been plagued with problems. Sony also has a new 2nd gen player coming out which is said to be really great, as well.

The PS3's here are Japanese, flown over by people, not sold here in mass amounts. I'm almost certain they aren't sold in Korea yet because Samsung wants to gouge local consumers with double-priced Blu-Ray Samsung players: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=83599

On PS3's, language is selectable in English from the start, just like a Mac. The games are non-region, although you'll want to make sure your games have English in them, or I'd guess they can be hard to figure out. I currently have 3 games on the way from www.play-asia.com (they sell English USA versions too).

Yes, a PS3 is expensive. Even still, my PS3 was the same price, or a bit less than what I would have paid for it in the USA. In Japan, the PS3 is even cheaper. I paid 540,000 won for mine from TechnoMart, and paid another 35,000 for a 2nd wifi controller.

You can learn a lot more at www.bluray.com forums.

GSXR

I would love to see a photo of DEFCON on a massive screen. I think that it would make a simple game like that outstanding.
