You do realise that you will, sooner or later, die.

My dad is turning 70 soon, and he recently said to me, "I was cool with turning sixty, but when you comin' on seventy you really know your days are numbered."*

Okay, all our days are numbered. But how? How do you want to go? Do you want to use your being until it's physical-worth has expired and your heart/arteries/brain gives out?

Or do you want the world war that must inevitably come (sooner or later) to give you cause to die either instantly or painfully/heroically?

I figure it must be painful either way. They always say, "Oh, he died peacefully in his sleep." But how can your heart give in or your arteries burst "peacefully"? They're obviously just trying to give the living happy thoughts. Which is nice, except you have to be the one who dies sooner or later. Won't be so nice then, eh?

So, it's gotta be a painful bitch to die. And we will all do/experiece it. It's like the most universal bond amongst humans - we all will, and we all know we will... die.

So how do you want to go?

Do you want to live a full life, be old and on your death-bed, with your loved ones around you, feeling sorry for you (and perhaps themselves - because your departure inevitably reminds them of their own mortality)?

Or do you want to be whisked away suddenly, perhaps violenty, without the "I love you"s and all that sappiness?

Rationally, one has to assume it won't be as pleasant as the whole "going to sleep," promise parents feed their kids (and doctors feed their patients). But do you want time to contemplate your life and it's end, or do you want to just kiss this world goodbye without having to think about it?

Personally, I'd rather die instantly. Without warning. Whether painful or not. Just cause thinking about it too long might drive me nuts (perhaps it already has). But it would be cool to die for something I believed in. I'd like to embrace the coming chaos and have myself blown to bits for an ideology I believed in. But then, there's no ideology I really give a shit about, so what the hell am I gonnna die for? Just put a bullet in me and let me sleep, for farks sake!

I worked in a nursing home for a long time and the WORST way to die is when your family does everything possible to keep you alive. No thank you!! When it's my time...LET ME GO!! I'd prefer to have a quick heart attack, or be hit by a bus in Korea than to suffer the ravages of Alzheimers disease. My Dad suffered for 8 years before he finally succumbed.

Let me live full and well and mentally alert until the last moment...but let the last moment be quick!!

And...OP: Tell your Dad that 70 is NOTHING!! My Mom is 83 and still going strong. It's all about how old you FEEL, not how old the calendar SAYS you are!!

Interesting thread. Bar getting knocked over by a bus/car etc, I'm pretty sure how I'm going to die. The old bowel cancer gene runs in the family. Father gone at 34, myself had bits cut out since 21. Every 2 years for a major check up (even in Korea). No sad story. Pretty happy with this choice, as when ( and who knows if), atleast I get a chance to put things in order. For me it's important to be able to say goodbye.

Um... I don't wanna die. Period.

And I don't believe in any afterlife. You simply cease to exist. So in that sense, I don't really give a shit. Wish I could live forever, but can't. Oh well. I could certainly do without any prolonged agony or torture prior to shutdown though.

I would like to die at sea
A watery grave sounds good to me
Spending eternity on the ocean bed
With octopi, and herrings that are red.

Hey, is tonight Red Cass Nite? Wasn't it Wednesdays?

Anyway, that's one way to go. Red Cassed to death.

I'm picking up TWO pitchers this time. (If I can't outdrink Oneofthesarahs, life isn't worth living.)

Everyone has to die. I hope to have a good long life but when the time comes and I've done all I wanted to do I think it would be a pretty cool bonus to go out while saving anothers life.

#1 Seventy-five year old man jumps on railways tracks, saves infant from certain death.

#2 Old geezer jumps into ocean, saving woman and children from shark.

Something like that would be kinda cool. Wink

Oh yeah, I want a statue. Very Happy

When I saw Thelma & Louise at the theater I hadn't known the ending was coming and when I saw it I thought it was friggin' awesome!! a modern Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid kind of ending.

But as the years pass I now see it as more like:

I think I'd want to die of a 100% fatal cancer diagnosed early and with little pain in the early stages, that way I would have the courage and resolve to say how I feel to people in my life, present but also from my past, to tidy my affairs and make sure I get done the important little things constantly put off.
The worst would be to be immediately crippled by an injury, deteriorating quickly but not quick and painful enough to avoid thinking about what I have done and not done.

Haha, two pitchers will be fine. Enough, but fine. Pace is everything.

I'm with Van Islander...

I always imagined death as a combination of a motorcycle, fire and a big, big cliff.
