I've played it for a couple of hours.

So far, not overly impressed. The graphics aren't amazing. The gameplay is rather tame. So far it's not an action-packed game. I don't know if it's supposed to be though.

I'll give it more time.

Actually cl, your system will choke and beg, just like rigs superior to yours have been doing.

The jury is out, but it seems the game is plagued with some kind of memory leak, which causes an eventual slowdown, regardless of the rig. Aside from this, with eveything enabled, this game will bring any modern system to it's knees. Alt+TABbing out and then back in will provide a quick fix, on the fly.

The leak can be patched, and it isn't for some time before that will become a factor, so the initial performance is still a valid benchmark. The leak is one of the problems brought about by the publisher trying to fianlly get the game into the market....rumor has it the devs weren't really finished. A shame; it had the makings of a true classic, genre-enhancing game.

Still, it's a heck of a trip....gotta get through the first few hours though...one of the worst starts to a game. However, with the way the game is set up and what one must do to become anything but chum, it is to be expected. Get some cash, weapons, etc, and the game takes on a whole new life.

64-bit and Vista owners are outta luck for the time being...again, it looks like the devs were really rushed. I guess the publisher was just thinking "patch, patch...later...."

Played it a bit this weekend.

Not sure if I like it or not. Doesn't really flow. Too much walking. It's not all that it's cracked up to be.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Flow. It has no real flow.

It seems that gamers always choose a side that devs cannot satisfy. Make a game with good flow, it becomes scripted and linear. Make a game without scripting, a huge, open map and countless possible missions with a number of given endings, and they say there is no flow.

Personally, I like that it is as life would be there. I like that. It really is like life; sometimes uneventful, sometimes thrilling, sometimes you just have to know when to stay inside for the night. Wink

I think it stands alone in that area...the open area, that is. Totally unscripted AI, a truly staggering number of possibilities for missions...I dig the open-ended occasional blandness of it. Unlike recent games which have you funneled down alleys, tight corridors and vent shafts to keep you on track, this game just has no real point. The point is to survive and thrive, if you can. In this way, I think it is genre-breaking.

I can't wait until it feels stable. For example, when you load up Doom 3 or FEAR, you know you are in a very large, detailed and complex game environment, but it feels solid. Stalker feels tenuous and unstable; indeed, I have been kicked out to the desktop a few times already.

Anyhow, it's moody, desolate and lonely. Cool.

I've had problems a few problems with Stalker. It starts going into like a slow-motion effect then locks up. I'll uninstall and try it again when the patches come out.

Demo, I enjoy the open, expansive feel too. Limitless possibilities. A bit like Oblivion there. Linear games can get repetitive.

It looks like a game with potential. But either I need a better rig or the game needs a patch or two.

Demophobe, you're like the residential FPS expert around here Laughing

Took some friends out and introduced the old and ancient Quake3. By the end of our 3 hour battles we were surrounded by kids wondering what the hell we just played and who the hell I was. I guess I can still mop the floor with the youngies. Wink

I've played through STALKER twice now and am half-way through my first run. I absolutely love this game, and the last FPS I played to completion was Deus Ex. It also plays very nicely on my rig. Great game!

Sorry to bring this thread back but...

Buggy.

I completed a task..."rescue mole" and he then walked me to a kind of sewer hole, where I presumed I was to go down to get the documents I was after.

Well, I went down, cleared out the bandits, walked and walked around with my flashlight, but couldn't find any documents. So, I found a way out.

I climbed out what I thought was a different ladder out, and I'm suddenly back in the "rescue mole" mission, which I then failed as I couldn't get to mole in time and he was killed.

Confused

Wacky.

Anyone else have any buggy STALKER stories?
