Inspired by a jaderedux posting in the job forum.

Im fed up with the use of the word "mistake" to describe intentional acts.

When someone breaks the law I often hear that "he made a mistake. Let's forgive him".

As far as I am concerned, an intentional act is not a mistake. if you hand in a plagiarized paper, you didnt make a mistake. if you kill someone intentionally, you didnt make a mistake. If you drank before driving, got in the car and had an accident, you didnt make a mistake. If you cheat on your spouse, you didnt make a mistake. ETC ETC ETC

What is it about today's society? Why do we excuse idiots' intentional acts by calling them mistakes?

Its not a mistake to kill someone. Its a perfectly reasonable well thought out thing to do? It really depends on how you use the word. Personally I think its a massive mistake to kill someone. Its just not a valid excuse.

Its not a mistake. Mistake implies the person just kind of did it, without meaning to, the blame isnt 100% on them. Which is bullshit. The way it is used says it all "He just made a mistake". Sorry. he didnt JUST make a mistake.

It depends on how you use the word I suppose. The meaning I got out of it, is that the person is admitting what they did was wrong.
