Your ARC is the date you have to worry about. It defines your status of sojourn and your period of sojourn.

Immigration just texted me out of the blue to confirm the date I must be out by.
Must be new standard practise to do so a month beforehand. |

I'd like to see some sort of procedure where teachers, as another fringe benefit of finishing a contract, don't have to go out of the country to change their ARCs.
Now my question, how much time are we given to exit the country past the expiration date? 10 business or calendar days? |

You have until midnight on the last date indicated on your ARC to either:
a) leave the country
b) get an extension.
http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM80/imm80_m_spl/imm80_main_1030.jsp
If you do NOT do (a) or (b) you will be in an overstay position and will be fined (100k won) AND get a blackmark in your immigration file.

Apologies for the slight deviation, but if you renew your contract once it's run out are you expect to start the new contract straight away i.e without having any time off to leave the country and go home/travel etc?
Do many employers defer contract starting dates so as to give you some downtime inbetween contracts? |

If you work in a public school you will be given 2 weeks for a "home" visit (with pay and they pay for your air ticket) at or near the end of your contract.
If you work for a hakwon then it is negotiable.
Most hakwons will say no.
If they do, simply tell them that you will finish your contract on the due date. Please have your ticket, salary, deposits and severance money ready.
Then tell them that you want to return to Korea 2 weeks after your contract has ended and ASK if they know anyone who will need a teacher.
Chances are you will get your time off (without pay) and they will give you a new contract. Raises and other benefits are negotaible. |

| Just read this thread and am slightly alarmed. My ARC expires on May 2nd, but don't think I'll be leaving until May 5th. Do I need to get an extension? |

YES - you need an extension.
Take your departure ticket, ARC and passport into an immigration office and get the extension. You can do this anytime within the last 30 days of your ARC.
It is free but it is REQUIRED. |
