I made a huge set of homophone dominoes for the second years today. Two separate sets. Also set up some flash card gambling game and a find the homophone passage.

What a bloody nightmare. Flash card gambling game went well. Find the homophone not so good cause it was hard.

Dominoes fucking knight mare. kids swapping cards mixing the two sets up. boy sfighting in the back of the room. Throwing punches and kicks at each other. one girl went a bit mental and took ten cards and sat on her own looking at them. refusing to play but stopping the game.

All in all a bloody mess.

Going to have to regroup and re think the strategy on this one.

Yeah once in a while something you put a lot of work into preparing just doesn't fly. That's part of the life of being an EFL teacher. It's kind of unfortunate that often at middle school (especially with second years, it seems) you're limited to things the class can do in an orderly manner, and thereby unable to plan things that might be a lot of fun in a more orderly class. Don't stop experimenting, though. Some ideas of which I was very sceptical turned out to be great.

Been there, had that happened. It's always interesting when you spend your time on something that you think will be a smash hit and it turns out completely the opposite.

I find the more time I spend preparing something the less likely it is to work out.

The only exception being the time I spent several hours preparing a scrabble game which kept the class hypnotized for the entire period. Only the rules got thrown out the window and kids just furtively arranged as many words as they could- which then got written up on the board.
