At least three retired four-star generals approached by the White House in recent weeks have declined to be considered for the position, the sources said, underscoring the administration's difficulty in enlisting its top recruits to join the team after five years of warfare that have taxed the United States and its military.
"The very fundamental issue is, they don't know where the hell they're going," said retired Marine Gen. John J. "Jack" Sheehan, a former top NATO commander who was among those rejecting the job. Sheehan said he believes that Vice President Cheney and his hawkish allies remain more powerful within the administration than pragmatists looking for a way out of Iraq. "So rather than go over there, develop an ulcer and eventually leave, I said, 'No, thanks,' " he said. |

Good for Sheehan.
Hardly understand why new bureaucratic positions are necessary -- especially one that, at least on the surface, institutionalizes a kind of field marshall over and above the civilian secretary of defense.
Strange idea this was. |

I too find this czar thing an odd idea. What is the real point of having one more layer of bureaucracy? We already have a president and a Secretary of Defense who are supposed to be running the war. That is their job--and in this case their voluntarily chosen job. It isn't like the war was forced on them. |

I think it's nothing more than a move by Bush to make it seem like he's getting a grip on things. Putting paint over cracked foundation. New Secretary of Defense. New general in Iraq. A surge (ie bringing troop levels back to where they were a year or so ago). They haven't exactly moved public opinion on the war.

The White House wants to appoint a high-powered czar to oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with authority to issue directions to the Pentagon, the State Department and other agencies, but it has had trouble finding anyone able and willing to take the job, according to people close to the situation. |
Doesn't that describe the role of the president? Shouldn't he be doing that? Does this conflict with his holiday plans? |

Actually this is a good idea.
The war Czar (I dont know why they called it that) would basiclly be the Middle Eastern theatre commander. Just as McArthur was the pacific theatre commander during WW2.
Its the same thing. I dont know why some people have their nuts ina twist over this. |

An interesting idea, albeit at the time America was fighting two wars, with the one in Europe being the big show. The European war, I would imagine, required Roosevelt's attention. Hence a need to delegate the pacific theater to a strong man.
I would really hope that the president who started this war could actually be bothered to take an active interest and be the guy who cuts through the crap. He's got the power. |
