WTF is with Scotch in this country, about the only labels I recoginize are Chivas and Johnny Walker. Ballantines too, but its a buttload fancier than the 14bucks a bottle back in the States. Scotch Blue? Lancelot? Windsor? Imperial? Ive never heard of any of these. Even at liqour stores back home that sold shelves upon shelves of scotch Id never seen these. Has anyone tried these scotches? are they any good? Ive never heard of them and am afraid to drop dough on something that gonna taste like a pretty bottle filled with Cutty Sark. Walker is a great standby whisky but where in the bloody hell is the Laphroaig?
I could also bring up the Shaksperean sized tragedy of a fact that there is virtually no bourbon to speak of here save for Jim Beam that costs 3x what it does back home but I wont. |

| Windor and Imperial are mediocre, not great, but not bad for the price. At Lotte Mart and other stores, you can usually find "gift packs" that include free shot glasses or high ball glasses. |

Something to do with taxes, I think, and with marketability. People here haven't typically learned much about single malts, and scotch has been portrayed not as a working man's booze, but instead as something for rich people. So, you can get the biggest labels, and if you want something special you can get the odd single malt for much more than it should cost, but Islay malts? I don't think so...somebody said once they'd seen some here, but I never have.
The Jamieson 12 year old Irish ain't bad at all, though, and it's only about 45,000 a bottle. Eat a piece of gim with it and smoke a big Cuban cigar and it might taste something like an Islay. |

| Those scotches you name are all export brands for the most part. Many countries export the lowest grade food products they produce to foreign markets that will pay exorbitant prices for them simply because they are foreign. They keep the good stuff for themselves, or for markets that demand higher quality. |

Sources? I'll never forget a Jackie Gleason interview where he was asked about his long term drinking.
His reply: "It woiked fuh me!"
I'm Texan, so excuse my romanization. My New Englandese isn't up to par.
Sure there are health risks associated with heavy drinking. But drinking doesn't preclude enjoying life. Many would claim the opposite. |

It's great stuff, but it's not scotch.
That's a bourbon/rye whiskey. |

Jamesons 45,000!! Holy crap! It was 24,000 in Walmart before they closed last year. It's not a great whiskey but certainly better than the Imperial/Windsor/Dimple rubbish that passes for whiskey in Korea.
MacAllen 12yo is in Costco for around 70,000. For a good single malt that's about the best you'll do in Korea, price-wise. Glenfiddich Solera reserve is in Costco for about 50,000. Not bad.
For an Islay, you could splash out for Laphroaig which I heard, but never seen, is available at Shinsaegae dept store. Dunno the price.
Like many foreign goods, the Korean food and drink industry like to market whiskey as a luxury item so they can give it a high price tag. Sad. |

Windsor is a Diageo brand and was blended by an acquaintance of mine, the current CEO of Diageo Korea, after his "whisky training" course with the company in Scotland. I am not a scotch drinker normally but on the rare occasion I have drunk it it seems a perfectly acceptable blend of Scotch whiskies. |

I know it's not scotch, but you guys might wanna go to Zen II in Shinchon. They have 50% alc Wild Turkey for 3,000 per glass. Drink 5 doubles for 30,000 (sensibly and slowly of course) and you'll start talking funny.
I know it's not the time or place but I rather agree with Svetlana about enjoying life more. I've cut my drinking down to one night per week and it sure makes Monday mornings less terrible. |
