Had a wierd one last night. My first very wierd experience in Korea.

I went on the beer Monday night and only managed 3 hours sleep so I was pretty tired last night. I got home, ate my food and watched a few TV shows I had downloaded whilst I washed my shirts. Once they were done I settled into bed and was easily asleep by 10pm.

During the night I heard a loud noise. I wasn't sure what it was, but it woke me. I lay in bed wondering what the hell had disturbed the silence and 60 seconds later I heard it again. It was very close and it sounded like an alarm, but not like any that I possessed.

I sat upright and saw my intercom unit. My appartment has a video intercom doorbell thing, and the screen was lit. Somebody was ringing my bell! As I never usually get visitors, the sound was new to me (I have only heard it once in the 5 weeks I have been here). Anyway... I get out of bed to take a look at the screen. Some young Korean woman is outside my appartment in what appears to be her pyjama's. Very strange!

By the time I make myself decent (I have never been one to answer the door to a stranger with my todger flopping around, even if it is 2.30am) she had gone. I went back to bed and fell back asleep.

As I left for school this morning I noticed something stuck to the bottom of my door. It seems she had slipped a post-it under my door. I picked it up and seeing the Korean writing I decided to take it to school to have it deciphered by my co-teacher.

This person had kindly slipped me a note asking me to keep the noise down as she had not been able to sleep for the past 2 hours. When I explained that I was asleep in my silent appartment my co-teacher explained that she had ended with an apology in case the noise was not coming from my appartment.

At first I found it funny but now I am a little annoyed. What kind of nutter wanders around at 2.30am and wakes up random people becasue they are unable to sleep? The note would have been ok - I could understand asking people to be considerate and if they were not sure who was making the noise they could be forgiven for dropping a note into all appartments. But to go around ringing random doorbells at 2.30 is madness!!!

If you like your sleep and someone is keeping you up at 2 am...you usually find out who it is. Of course, I usually try to make sure I get the right person... Confused

However, if you trying to find a noisy neighbour and on of the apartments you are knocking on the door of is deadly silent with no noise at all coming from the inside, and no one answering the door. Its a good possibility that thats the wrong Apt!! But then again logic does not befall many young Korean women!!

You weren't playing your pots and pans drum set and singing at the top of your lungs in your sleep again, were you?

Turn your dorbell/intercom off. It works for me. I only turn it on if I am expecting someone. Otherwise, some nut job will disturb my sleep! I love my sleep!

Thank you! the intercom had only 3 buttons on teh front of it and I only know what one of them does (turns on the cam). I just had a good look at it and found the standby switch hidden away Very Happy

I'll just leave it off permanently. If people want me they usually call. theonly other person who ever needed me was my appartment manager and he buggered off when he realised I didn't speak Korean so I doubt I will see him again.

My intercom system doesn't work, which is nice in weeding out people who don't know me, as I tell people who are coming to visit me to knock rather than ring the bell. However, I once forgot to tell one of my friends, and after I didn't answer the doorbell, instead of trying to knock like any sane person would do, she assumed she got the wrong apartment number and began wandering up and down the walkway yelling, "Sarah! Saaaaaarah!" I'm sure my neighbors really loved me that night.
