| The big companies also rip you off. You have to be careful teaching anywhere in Korea. |

I know many hogwan owners that are honest and hard working. Ive met dozens through friends that have treated their employees with respect. Im sorry if you have had bad experiences, but dont belittle the owners that have made sacrifices to keep their foreign teacher happy.
Perhaps you should within for the issue |

| I worked at a great hagwon for 4 1/2 years, lived in Hongdae, worked in Mok-dong, small classes, knew my kids personally, taught some for the entire time, got paid on time, and didn't deal with any beaurocracy or government dictates. It was great. |

To all new teachers looking for a job in Korea, stay away from all Hogwons, unless you want to have problems.
What is the difference between a hogwon and a large company? I work at a large company here in Busan but we still refer to ourselves as a hogron.
Do larger companies use another title?
Should your statement read, "if you work at a hogwon, work at a large company"? |

| i'm looking into working for a hagwon. I know the director is good. However, with my teacher's cert..they're only offering me 2.1 without housing. I figured I'd be taking the good with the bad by having a reliable pay check..but no housing? That's a lot out of my pocket. Is having a good director worth it? |

No. 2.1 without housing is like 1.7 or 1.8 with housing (depending on the neighborhood, it could be even less). And with a teacher's cert? No way. |

Most teacher that work at Hogwons successfully have been teaching for a while and have some experience in knowing how to deal with corrupt bosses, but if you are new to Korea forget about it. Go with a larger company where your guaranteed your monthly pay on time and your severance pay. Too many people get screwed out of this and end up getting fired a month before.
Yes I know most of you know this already but this post is for people that are new coming to Korea. I wish we could put these holes out of business.

Hogwon = HOLE |
To all new teachers who have read this far, the OP (original poster) has not (to my knowledge...correct me if I'm wrong, OP!) conducted a survey nor otherwise sampled the general population of hagwan teachers. The OP is likely going off his/her own experience and that of some other teachers he/she knows, plus what he/she may have read on Dave's. Note that people post when they have problems, and not nearly as often when things are going well.
My hagwan pays very, very well for a first timer, and even better for someone with experience. Our apartments are not studios. We have tubs in our bathrooms. Our hagwan owner is honest, and administration listens to foreigners' issues and considers them before making decisions.
So to all prospective teachers out there, remember that each person's opinion is just one opinion, including my own. |

I had a similar great 3.5 years at a hagwon on Geoje, and the guy right before me got his bonus and spoke of all the great things I indeed came to experience there, and the guy after me just told me his year there was good and he is leaving with his bonus, happy with the experience.
And I'm happy at the hagwon I'm at now, preparing to re-sign for another year.
Plus I've met plenty of happy hagwon teachers. In fact, based on those I meet, the biggest gripers seem to be public school teachers unhappy with their coteachers or textbook or staff or accommodations.
I think the amount of bad hagwons is a minority, a significant minority, but a minority nonetheless (10%-20%). That adds up to a lot of legit complaints, which overshadows (especially online) the voice of those enjoying themselves, many of whom don't share that fact so much. |

I have worked at 4 different hagwons...
I would have called all of them pretty good work places where I have never been paid late(bar one severance but that wasn't my wonjangs fault) and have never had any hassles except for the minor ones i would encounter anywhere.....
The one i work at now is faultless. the owner works hard and makes sure you do too, but she pays well, and goes out of her way to help you with any problem you have big or small....I will stick with my current director over a big company or public school any day of the week. |

I worked at a hagwon for a year. now finishing up at a public ele for a year. really considering going back to a haggie. won't argue the plus and minuses of each job, there are enough of those threads.
my haggie was pretty good. There were some bad points, but I really soured the relationship by not underatanding the way business relationships work here. Plus, I was a suck a$$ teacher. Didn't know it at the time either.
There are some f'ed hagwons, but i wouldn't tell a newbie not to go for one. instead, I'd say, learn how sheyat works instead. |

The word "ass" isn't filtered. Otherwise, every assume, Cass, pass, lass, and molasses would be *bleep*ed. Meanwhile, a word like cock just affects a few other words, like cocktail and Joe Cocker, so it gets filtered. We won't even go into the *beep* and *beep* words. |
