Hey, myself and my girlfriend just arrived in Gwangju, in the sangmu area from Canada to teach at a private school here. Were wondering if there are any popular foreigner hangouts in Gwangju. We are looking for people who like to cut loose a little on the weekends. If you know any good spots please be specific in your responses as we don't really know the city that well yet

Thanks

Cut loose? Swinging?

I'm up for that, pretty sure the wife is as well.

Take a taxi to the downtown area of Gwangju. There is a bar called Mike and Dave's SpeakEasy. All the foreigners hang out at the bar over weekends. Here is the bar's website: www.mdspeakeasy.com The website has a map of the location.

The two most popular foreigner bars are Speakeasy and Soul Train, and they're pretty close to each other. Information and directions: http://wiki.galbijim.com/Gwangju

I've never been to the branch in Gwangju, but in Bundang I would always go to 이화주막, a hof with really great food and decent prices. It's in the same area as the two above bars, but you'd basically have to stumble upon it, as it's futile to give directions (you'll see once you get to the "Chungjangno" area of downtown). Anyone ever try the one in Gwangju?

Oh, and there are a bunch of foreigners in Sangmu, so it shouldn't get too lonely. It's a decent area. A lot of new apartments, and you have a few department stores and movie theatres there. The strange thing is that whole area thrives off of the sex industry. My favorite part is the building behind the TGIFriday's with 4 안마 (massage parlors/brothels). I guess they must all work for the same gang.

Taxi? Phhtt... there's a subway stop in Sangmu & you can take that right downtown.

To the OP:...so you're new in town. Need stuff? http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=83919

saturdays:

Go to GIC Talk...sometimes boring, but a great place to meet people.

Go to dinner with GIC people.
Go to the following bars in some order: Truffaut wine bar, Munchen Meister brew pub, Speakeasy.

Truffaut review here: http://gwangjunews.benham-esl.com/forums/files/nov_2006_970.pdf

Haven't been to Soul Train since Speakeasy opened, but it's always an option.

All accessible from (new) Culture Center subway stop.

WA-Bar and Miller time are 2 places I went to when I lived in Sangmu. They're right behind the Columbus cinema I think. Miller time's great because they set up a terrace out in the street once it gets warm.
