Quickie for you Public School types:

I may re-up at my school depending on certain conditions, but a big question I'd like answered--have any of you that re-upped not gone home? Or not gone anywhere? If so, do PubSchools give you cash in lieu of going back to your home country, or say, if you wanted to go to Thailand or India, will they pay for a flight, even if it's not to your home country?

Nothing explicit in my contract, only the typical, "...will have a two week paid break...airfare to home country paid for..."

I would think that if you wanted to go to Thailand instead...they would have no problem with it.

The problem would arise if you wanted a ticket that costs more than a ticket back to your home country....

As for cash in lieu....it happens with some schools.

I'm with GEPIK and get a return ticket to thailand in lieu of a ticket home.

My GEPIK contract says it will give the cash if you don't return home on a renewal. Posted it somewhere in here. I presume everybodies is the same.

I know teachers who went to another country, say India, then went home to their native country, then back to Korea. They were given money a round trip ticket would cost to their home country and just paid the difference.

This matter may differ from province to province, I don't know.

I was given 2 million won reimbursment for travel expenses along with the first paycheck of my second year. Nothing in the contract, just an agreement with the Education Office for signing a new contract.
I went to Thailand as well as the States.

Excellent. thanks guys. Reason I ask is I'm in a lil' different situation. Hired privately by my HS, I'm not part of a program like SMOE, EPIK, or GEPIK--but I have essentially the same contract, and they do defer to the SMOE/GEPIK contract/administration if there are questions.

Jeju,
I think in your case it will come down to your negotiating skills. I would point out to them that a lot of public schools are having trouble hiring teachers (my school still doesn't have a teacher despite the fact I left almost 2 months ago!) esp. if you are out in the sticks.
