I'm hearing a lot of stuff about the dangers of Mindanao. I understand anywhere in the world has a risk of terrorism but I hear there is a real danger of getting kidnapped in some areas of this island. Can anyone tell me where the safe spots are here? I'm not sure whether or not to venture this far south in the Philippines or not. |

From what I've heard it's just usual media sensualisation. |

The only place that is NOT really safe is the far south-west. The Sulu Archipelago and the Zamboanga Peninsula are NOT good places to be a tourist. There are still active combat operations going on down that way.
The north east is fine and include places like Siargao island (cloud 9 surf break). |

I second what ttompatz said. Avoid Zulu and Zoambonga (two VERY important places to avoid). There are a few other rural places, but most of the rest of Mindinao is just fine, particularly major tourist attractions and the other major Mindinao cities - Davao, Cagayan de Oro.
I really like the cities of Mindinao, they are very safe and the people are great. I'll go back there again this Winter I'm sure. |
