Looks like they have an edge in the next level as well because the last time the games were in North America was '96, and the last four games will have been in Europe (2X - Athens and London), Asia (Beijing), and Australia (Sydney). Rio may have some advantage, too, if they have a good proposal.

I have mixed feelings about this. I think it could be a lot of fun to be there during the games, but I imagine the development leading up to them could be very disruptive of life there. It may push them to fix up the el, though. I also worry about the potential damage to the lakefront. I understand using it for the venues because it is the crown jewel of Chicago, but it would be very sad if it were ruined somehow or made less accessible to people in the long run.

From the plans I've looked at, it doesn't look like the lake front will be changed much. The Olympic Village will be built where the truck parking lot for McCormick Place is. The Stadium, which will be partially deconstructed after the games, will be built in Washington Park. I think it will do a lot to bring development to the South Side.

The El is slowly being upgraded. Several South Side stations had gone dramatic reconstruction in the last few years I was there. I'm not sure if the circle line talks resulted in anything, but it'd be a nice addition to the system.

Overall, I think it will give the world a chance to associate Chicago with something besides Al Capone, The Jungle, and Michael Jordan.
