Korea Falls Behind China in Competitiveness
Quote: |
South Korea ranked 23rd in competitiveness among 66 countries, falling behind China, a private institute said on Tuesday.
The Institute for Industrial Policy Studies (IPS) said in its 2007 country competitiveness report that Korea scored 45.77 points, with its ranking falling by one notch from 22nd in 2006.
China ranked 21st, climbing three notches. Among the countries close to Korea in competitiveness were Spain, Chile, Italy, Thailand, the Philippines, Poland and Malaysia.
In comparison, Korea placed 38th in a country competitiveness report by Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development (IMD) last year.
The Netherlands topped the IPS list by scoring 65.98 points, followed by the United States with 62.41. The report placed Hong Kong 8th _ the only Asian candidate among the top 10 _ and Japan, 20th.
The IPS report analyzes market demand, related industries, corporate management and production factors, on top of some hundreds of statistics and surveys in various categories.
An analysis on the competitiveness of manpower, for example, evaluates workers, politicians, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs and professionals.
Korea's entrepreneurs, ranked 15th, and professionals, placing 16th, had competitiveness, but politicians and workers stayed well below the average. The institute said Korean politicians and bureaucrats ranked 42nd in terms of competitiveness, and workers 53rd.
Korea was uncompetitive in energy and resources. It scored around the average in most of the other categories such as corporate strategy, transportation and logistics, and overseas investment.
It was competitive in domestic demand, ranking 11th among the 66 countries regarding the size and the quality of the market.
``Making most of the market demand, its competitive entrepreneurs and professionals, Korea should make efforts to further develop political, economic and social systems for stronger competitiveness,'' the report said.
