It is very impressive.

I am running Vista Ultimate on my 1.4 Ghz Pentium M notebook with 64mb of video RAM running Aero and it works! It automatically started upgrading itself of the latest security patches. MS has really dug deep on this one.

Quite a few things that was faster - booting up, navigating through folders, search bar is on every window thanks to indexing and folder previews are more informative. Actually I knew that my HD was fragmented to hell but still Vista is fast and responsive even with the defragmenter is running in the background.

The fonts are softer (compared to XP which can appear sharp and unfriendly although this can easily be changed using cleartype).

Programs like utorrent and firefox blended in nicely to the Aero theme.

If you like widget type features on your desktop, you'll love the sidebar. To date there are hundreds of gadgets here : http://gallery.live.com/default.aspx?l=1

I did have some problems installing Vista because it wasn't on a bootable medium, had to install XP first. However, unlike XP, I didn't have to install ANY device drivers. It just worked right off the bat. Right now I'm working on getting XVID/DIVX to show.

A couple of questions :

1. My computer memory shows 768MB even though I know I have 2 512mb sticks in there. What's the story?

2. Anyone know of any good Vista forums/sites to visit?

I am just impressed that this bloated OS could even run on my lowly notebook. That is all. Very Happy

has it DRM'd your media files?

is it a legit or pirated version?

looking forward to hearing more about your experience.

has it DRM'd your media files?

Quote:
So really, what's different in Vista? It all boils down to support for HD-DVD and Blu-ray, really. The AACS DRM used by both formats is supported in Vista. Both formats also require a secure digital video output path. An HD-DVD or Blu-ray movie can, optionally, say "if they don't have that protected digital video pathway via HDCP, reduce the resolution of the output." Some movies will have this and some won't, and I hear there's supposed to be some clear labeling on the box. Vista supports this feature as well. Many readers seemed to think the protected digital video path in Vista means they'll have to buy a new monitor. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can use Vista and all its features just fine with your existing monitor. The OS just supports this requirement of HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Any operating system that does not support HDCP in this way will always reduce the resolution of those HD-DVD or Blu-ray discs that choose to require it. In other words, expect similar DRM features to be added to operating systems such as OS X or for them to have crippled support for HD-DVD and Blu-ray, or no support at all.

But the key word here is support. Vista supports these DRM schemes, but does not require them. There is absolutely nothing in Vista that will require you to use content with DRM. There is nothing that will prevent you from running those applications that strip the DRM from your DVDs. Your ripped movies and MP3s and other DRM-less content will work just fine. Vista will not phone home to report your illegal file sharing activities and notify the MPAA and RIAA and phone your mom who won't say boy are you gonna get it when your father gets home.

I haven't experienced any intervention from MS regarding my media stuff. I'm using mostly 3rd party software to play them anyway. Some people have gotten Media Center to play HD stuff. I'm still trying to use my second monitor to play MC as it is very convenient way of handling all your medias.

is it a legit or pirated version?

It was a legal CD that I borrowed Wink

So far so good. Installing the language packs and will test the DVD writer. It is a lot more user friendly for those not familiar with 2000/XP, but still very similar to its predecessors. I will be looking at the downsides carefully though as nothing is perfect.

Mini conclusion, need more RAM! :

1. Firefox sucked up a lot of RAM despite running just one window. 32MB for one window as oppose to IE using 25MB with 2.

2. I've noticed a slowdown after downloading video codecs and a couple more software. The more files you have on your system, the more bloated it becomes obviously, and I believe this will have an effect on the Indexing feature (which takes every file's details and stores them into some database).

3. It took me 5 minutes to delete 1GB off a USB drive. This could have been a freak move cause I was able to delete other stuff with little delay. Ah had de-fragmenting on!

3. Tried to run Quake3 straight off and it worked really well, though again you'll need all the memory you can get if you run it in a windows screen.

4. Search is very fast via Indexing. No more of the computer physically looking for files and taking up precious hard disk time and memory. However it is an added service, which means that it still needs to be loaded into memory, hence the need for more RAM.

5. I am having trouble playing my movies (VLC doesn't show up) and WMP can't seem to play movies in full screen properly. None of my Full HD movies play. In Windows Media Center it is a different story, they played really well. I might have to explore hacks on WMC to play non regular files, if this doesn't work then I'll probably have to revert back to XP.

Turned off Aero and Vista is infinitely faster, or at least as fast as XP.

Question though, will my notebook take 4GB of memory? Currently its sitting on a couple of 512mb RAMs.

Another thing, My LCD takes a resolutoin of 1920x1050 though the highest I can go on Vista is 1600x1024.

your ram isn't showing up fully because it may not be completely compatible with your computer, or, you have two different types of ram in the PC.

Just a few possibilities.

I realised that my video is using shared memory with 64MB built-in the card.

Ok some late night feedbacks :

- I love Windows Media Center because with a remote I can control all my media while lying down (I'm a real couch potato I am). The thing does suck about 150mb of RAM but everything in it works very smoothly. I've already customised it to play all my DIVX/XVID stuff.

- All my old programs run without fuss.

- Running with Aero off is so much faster, only because I'm running a lowly 1.4Ghz Pentium M. I still get all the features of Vista and can turn on Aero when I'm not playing a video.

And of course some bad points :

- Does not want to recognise my SD card of photos.

- Before installing, Vista required that you have at least 4.3GB of free space. I did all that but still insisted that I need to free up more. I gave it 5GB (was all I had in the available booting partition). Anyone needing to install Vista Ultimate should really give it 10GB of space and allocate a chunk of that to paging. Expensive on a notebook but worthwhile on a desktop.

- I've accepted the fact that my notebook is too slow for real Full HD content, so a new dawn begins Wink

Installing Quake4 now Very Happy

PS. Anyone see this?!!!!!!

Yep. Download the high-res version....it's much more impressive. The low quality of youtube does it no justice at all.

I downloaded the super-hd version which also came with MGS IV, which had even more impressive graphics. Only on the PS3 though.

Back to Vista, can I get a role call on who is using Vista on Daves???

not for the foreseeable future. My new computer is postponed until late fall, but realistically December or first week january and the current one can't run vista.

when I get the new computer I'm not planning on going Vista. I'm going to stick with XP until it is no longer supported with updates.

created a poll here.
