Something is wrong with my desktop. It is a P4, running at 2400...but every day or so, it just suddenly winks out. When I restart, I can see that the initial BIOS reads that the CPU is set to 1800, and then I get taken into the BIOS settings, where I am told that the computer has an incorrect processing speed. However, the speed is listed as 2400 (and the only other option is 'manual'.) So I go ahead and save that setting, and the computer boots normally. Eventually, however, it will apparently switch itself to 1800, and wink out again. What is going on? It never used to do this! Any ideas?

Choose "reset to defaults" in the BIOS. It should put it back to normal. Somethng is wacky in there and the system wants to to rectify it, so it keeps coming up.

I thought of that, but I am worrying about it not booting at all. It doesn't give me an option of 1800, but it switches to that, apparently at random, and this screws up the system. Could it be some kind of virus?

Yes it could be a virus.

Try pulling the "supercap" battery dohickey thing on the MB.

Leave it out for a bit, ten seconds should be enough.

Put the "supercap" battery thingamajig back in.

That will (hard) reset the ROM to the OEM settings.

You may need to flash the ROM with any updates the EOM may have issued, however the original settings should be stable enough.

Good luck, and have a pleasant tomorrow.

Any chance the battery itself is going bad?

1: Yup..it is the battery. You have to change the battery. When you are powering down the system resets to default. It is cheap as hell to buy a new battery but a pain in the butt to find a place that sells it.
2: You could also look for a Bios update on the net. Perhaps your board has a manufacturer problem that is fixed with a bios upgrade.

thanks for the help....maybe it is the battery, I guess I could look in the box, although that is not really something I have a lot of confidence in doing. Also, I got this computer second hand, and it is just a 'built' box. I am not sure I have any bios cds for it. How would I even boot it if I take out the battery...doesn't that battery keep the bios information?

What would the battery look like?

Round. Looks like a watch battery, but bigger. Hard to miss...get in there with a flashlight. They are generally very accessible.

ah ha! The same exact problem I had. I had a core 2 duo E6600 @ 2.4ghz. After a while (2 months) I noticed a considerable slowdown in my gaming and PC performance. When I checked the BIOS, it read at 1.6ghz. My problem was that the CPU had cooked itself. It was faulty, I returned it, and they sent me a new one. This time, I put AS5 and a Zalman cooler on it. No more problems.

It may behoove (how do you spell that anyways?) you to considered the fact that your CPU may be malfunctioning. Check the temperature in the BIOS and see what it says. My core 2 duo's thermal threshold is 65 degrees celcius. That bastard was up to 91 degrees celcius.

Find the threshold for your cpu and check it against the bios temp reading.

What? The almighty new Intel chips, which are supposed to be cooler than previous chips, aren't exactly as-stated?

Oh dear, I am in over my head now...and it is getting worse.

Now the computer works for about 3 minutes and then either freezes, or reboots itself.

I wouldn't mind getting a new computer, but could I save all the software etc on my hard drive? I don't have any disks for most of it...

Well....it seems like things are getting worse. Are you sure the memory is in firmly (not loose), all cards are in firmly (video card), and CPU is firmly inserted with the heatseak and fan attached. The moving appears to have made it worse..this implies that something is loose. Just check to see that everything is firmly connected.
