I work at a public school and didn't have enough time to eat my breakfast today so I brought some cookies to school. However, it wasn't long before other teachers noticed them and started helping themselves. Then the vice-principal came and helped himself to the whole packet! Bizarre...I like my school and the teachers so it's not a problem, but it's certainly a lot different from what I'm used to back in England!

if you bring food, don't show it to them. especially to your coworkers and your boss. if you do, they would think the food is for sharing and they will eat it without questions. thats how things work in here

I think someone else posted a story awhile back about a box of oranges and a few of the Korean teachers took all of them before the rest of them (who were in class) got back to the teacher's room. I don't remember for the life of me who posted that story, but it's stuck in my mind.

That's right. Also, if your school has a fridge, they think whatever is in there is game for everybody. Don't be surprised if on one of your breaks you go back to the fridge to find your food gone.

Yeah, many Koreans I have worked with eat like pigs, and if you weant some, you better grab it and be a pig, too. The mom of one of my kindy kids brought in 4 boxes of Krispy Kremes one day. I got one of them. Some of the other teachers and I were laughing about where the rest of them went off to.

To the OP: Cookies are an unhealthy breakfast by the way. How can you eat sweets that early?

I love my school. My teachers would never eat something off my desk. We have a table that all free food goes onto.

But I understand how most Koreans don't understand "personal space." Commies.

I know that cookies are an unhealthy breakfast, and I wouldn't normally eat them at any time of the day - never mind breakfast. But, I bought a new suit last week and it took me a bit longer than I thought to get ready in the morning so I had no time for my usual breakfast of muesli (for as long as my stocks last) and blended fruit juice (usually strawberry/banana).

So...I needed to eat something quickly before my classes start (boys middle school) as otherwise I'd have had little energy after a couple of classes of 1st grade. It did the job.

hehe, well, it didn't actually bother me and - hey - I didn't complain about them taking it. I was just rather surprised, but looking back I shouldn't have been. Smile

The teachers who share my office never take anything without being handed it... they are good like that. They give me tons of stuff though. Even the ones who don't know how to say hello know to say "delicious" when they hand me something.

Once every few weeks I like to repay the favour and bring them something to eat. Today they are getting Oreo's after I bought a ton at costco...

It isn't free food i find but free anything....pens, paper, tickets

I am not the one to stereotype but the words "free" seem to mean a free-for-all in korean trying to get as much as they can.

I know us back in the west like free stuff too but here free is like drawing in the ajumma vultures....

They were on your desk and they took them? Wow, that's pretty bold. Although I'll be the one helping myself to the beer and the Jack Daniel's in the fridge on my last day if no one has claimed them.

I've had the pleasure of receiving food from staff and students. Not sure what the story is in public schools but that's downright ruuude!!

Ya, most Koreans won't take something off your desk. That is pretty bold.
