I am planning on moving to Vancouver in the next couple of years. I am visiting this summer to check out different areas. For all those who lived in, or are familiar with Vancouver, where are some good places to live (not rich places). I am looking to have an apartment go to ubc (will have a car so distance isn't really important). Any and all suggestions would be great. |

I used to live in the metrotown area (2 minutes to the skytrain). The area was pretty good. |

Close to the sky train isnt really important to me.. a nice area and not too expensive is most important. I will have a car, so public transportation really doesn't matter.
As for in the winter, why? |

I used to live in Kitsilano. Easy commute for me to UBC, not the cheapest of places, but was worth it for convenience. |

I think you should go in the winter to see if you can "handle" it. It's more depressing than...well, depression. It's baaaad.
Are you planning on buying a house? If you are, I'd still suggest you try to live close to the skytrain as it opens things up.
I don't remember area's name at all but here is a descripion:
1) If you get o the commercial station skytrain get out and face SOUTH. Go to the area south and east (that is "to the left"). There is a really nice big park there and, if you go a bit further away from the main/commercial intersection, there's a park with a couple ponds/lakes in em.
Kits is nice but I found it so yuppy. The area around commercial drive is nice so long as you don't go TOO far north as that will slowly start to getting to be more dirty before the olympics as the bums and druggies get pushed further from downtown. But go further south and it gets REALLY nice (if you ask me).
There's also a GREAT supermarket on commercial called "Santa Barbara" that has a break your heart, deli. Out of everything i miss in vancouver (not including my friends), I miss that supermarket the most. |

Kits is great. Near the beach and UBC. I lived in West Point Grey...pretty expensive but I found a cheap place. There are a few student ghettos. It was the ideal place to live.
Eastside is much cheaper and not so bad if you're close to a B-line stop. Actually this is key if you are planning on taking the bus: the B-Line! |

That's a really open ended question. I would have different advice for someone looking to settle down with a family than I would for a single guy/gal.
If you are single then I don't really think you can beat English Bay. There are plenty of places for rent in the area as lately condos seem to be the way to go. My buddy has a small but very nice bachelor pad and even a small swimming pool on the roof of his building and he only pays 680 dollars a month. Don't let anyone tell you that Vancouver has to be expensive. I lived right on English Bay, in one of the tallest buildings, with a beautiful view and I was only paying $850 a month for a spacious one bedroom. If you are a runner or into things like kayaking than English Bay is great. Kits is also nice but if you are in English Bay that puts you within walking distance of all the amenities. Restraunts in the area are to die for and there are plenty of places that won't cost you an arm and a leg
DAMN YOU, DAMN YOU to HELL! Man, I hadn't felt homesick for the longest time until you came along. |
