Howdy,

My wife and I are being courted by Pagoda at Jongno, and are wondering if anybody has worked there in the last 12 months and would like to share their opinion of the experience.

I have seen many threads with various opinions about Pagoda, but nothing particularly recent.

If anybody can help us out, that would be great.

We have a few questions.

Do they pay your airfare out of Korea?

Is it still policy for teachers to pay enrolment fees for students who leave the school?

What are the current dress codes?

Thanks,

Ben and Bree

If you're in Seoul, pop in and say hi. Teacher's room is in the basement. Just go during a quiet time and strike up conversation.

I worked at Jongro for 2 years. I'd recomend it, if you're serious about working hard and want to learn a lot about adult ESL.

I worked at Jongro for 3 years, and wouldn't. The teaching was good, but management and their policies were a huge negative, way outweighing the positive near the end.

Hey Frankenstien,

Could you please give me an idea of what kind of things it was that you didn't like? Sorry to be naggy for specifics, but what annoys one person, doesn't always annoy another, you know what I mean?

Where are you working now, and how does it compare?

What were the wages like?

Cheers,

Ben and Bree

I left at the end of the whole illegal sign-this-or-youre-fired contract beatdown in Feb-Apr 2005. Add to that the removal of the seniority system and block shifts, and adding (periodic) mandatory weekend classes... sorry, I wouldn't work there again or recommend it to anyone. When they cleaned house in 2005, there was not one teacher left with more than 2 years of seniority. SEVERAL teachers with more than 4-5 years were let go. The Head Teacher, who sacrificed quite a bit by being their mouth piece and doing everything they asked, got the shaft, too.

I'm back in uni again. And for all the hype about "We are so famous, everyone knows Pagoda all over Korea. You can use it on your resume"... it is so not in touch with reality... half the unis I interviewed with had no idea who what or where Pagoda was ("Is it the name of a park?") Both my last uni and my current uni hired me without knowing anything about them. My time with Pagoda factored in exactly ZERO in my getting my uni positions.

They're just a little full of over-inflated self-importance. You can find better schools and less unscrupulous bosses elsewhere. I don't even want to know what kind of illegalities they still have in their contracts.
