Ok I have a few questions. I just purchased a pretty sweet intel macbook the other day. However, there are some things I that I would like to do that still require that I use windows. Namely using soulseek and playing some games.

What should I do? Should I download a pirated copy of XP and install it? How much technological know how would this take? I am not looking for moral advice here. Can I find a legitimate copy of Windows English anywhere in Korea? If so where? Is any of this even necessary? Is there a mac equivalent to soulseek?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am a fairly confident PC user but some of the menu settings on my mac are going to take some time to learn.

You will need Bootcamp or Parallels to run XP on the Mac, I believe.

Funny how you would buy a Mac, knowing that what you want to do really can't be done.

Typical Dave's reply there. You didn't answer my question at all. I know that I need bootstrap. I bought a mac because I was sick of my PC's crapping out on me.

Demonphobe, you are incorrect. Try not to be so smarmy. It doesn't surprise me that a post like yours would be among the first to reply. He can both play games and use Soulseek.

He can use Windows XP under Parallels, but Parallels doesn't yet support 3D. Therefore, you could use Soulseek on it, but you won't be able to play games. Under Bootcamp, you can play games, as 3D support is included.

I play Battlefield 2 on my MacBook Pro just fine. Great frames per second and wonderful performance. You should be able to play games just the same on your MacBook. I have a 1.83ghz version. You probably have a 2.0ghz unit.

Yea, I know, guy. If he knew anything about computers, he'd know that games can be played under virtualization, that processors have advanced to a level such that running two OSs is completely feasible, and that if he had actually played a game on a recent Apple in the last year it's not like playing a game on a Commodore.

it depends what type of games you want to play. i think the macbook has an integrated graphics chip, so its not going to be able to play any high end games. the macbook pro on the other hand has a dedicated graphics card, so that's a different story.

as for windows on the mac.
you can either install windows xp or vista. if you install xp, make sure its SP2!

you can find copies of xp sp2 all over the torrent networks. download it and burn it.
then download and install bootcamp from the apple website. after its installed, run it (it should be in /Applications/Utilities).

the bootcamp assistant will guide you through the setup process. make sure you have a blank cd handy because you will need to burn some drivers (the bootcamp assistant will do that).

As the others have said, use Parallels if you want to switch between OSX and XP without rebooting, or Bootcamp to boot to either. Difference is that you don't get full performance in Parallels for games.

But Demo is right, for optimal performance you don't buy a Mac you buy a PC. Don't believe me? Ask any gamer which is the platform of choice for games and highly intense graphics.

But the Macs have good enough graphic cards to play second tier games.

Alright, I was wrong. I didn't mean it like that, really. Yea, I agree with the other guy and you about PCs being used by serious gamers. I just read you wrong, Demophobe. I apologize.
