I recently saw an ad for new teachers at Korea University. If anyone on this site is currently working there, please pm me and let me know if you have a moment. I have a few questions. Thanks in advance. |

The people (mostly foreign teachers) conducting the interviews have a serious attitude problem, I've heard. Not sure about the job itself though. |

A friend worked there. I don't know about attitude problem. But he said they get a lot of mindless applications. That has a way of turning anyone cynical. He said if you apply, you need to have your paper work 100%. If you miss anything, it goes right into the trash. This is one of Korea's top universities. They do expect a lot. |

Are these unigwon or tenure track faculty positions?
I find it odd that foreign staff are interviewing new teachers - 1 foreign faculty member would make more sense.
What are the contract terms for these positions?
Are there any limitations on contract renewals? Are their instructors required to write papers and attend conferences? How many hours per-week. Possibility for promotions? Full summer and winter vacations? |

Many, many times I have applied for a job with them (surprisingly they are the highest paying in terms of gross income, but they have a tremendous amount of yearly, high profile, job-wanted advertising; high turnover?) and that is the last I hear of them. I'd like to believe my applications were not mindless since I got 5 job offers from other places. If they staff their candidates based on how organized and complete their paperwork is, they might be passing up a lot of poetential talents based on trivialities. I got turned down by SNU and Ewha, but at least they had the decency to e-mail me and call me if there was a problem. ANd foreginers are in charge of interviews? It seems to me that foreigners are much, MUCH harder to impress than Korean interviewers. Whew! No thank you. In any case, I have a nice job now and if I have to deal with that kind of cynicism, I'd rather have my happiness and be poorer than be miserable and be richer. but it's just my opinion. |

So, in which section / department / program do the ex-pat English teachers teach?
Definitely not faculty positions based on the ad that I read on Dave's. |

And are much more likely to pass on people who may threaten their position at the uni. It's quite a juggling act: good enough to pass muster to work there, but not QUITE good enough to knock them off their perch. |

We have a mix of foreigners and koreans doing the interviews. The foreigners are there primarily to check the freaky waygook radar is working correctly. |
