For teaching purposes, are the terms 'chipmunk' and 'squirrel' interchangeable, or is a chipmunk a type of squirrel?
Thanks,
Ken |

Yep, it seems a chipmunk is a type of squirrel....

A squirrel (Greek, skia "shadow" and oura "tail"; "tail that casts a shadow") is a medium-sized rodent of the family Sciuridae. In the English-speaking world, it commonly refers to members of the genera Sciurus and Tamiasciurus. These typical members of the family are tree squirrels with large bushy tails, and are indigenous to Europe, Asia and the Americas. Similar genera are found in Africa. However, the Sciuridae also include flying squirrels, and ground squirrels such as the chipmunks, prairie dogs, and woodchucks. |

Chipmunks are smaller and they have the stripe on their sides. In the past I've had a few 'pet' chipmunks but never a squirrel.
When Iwent to the cottage as a kid, chipmunks were braver and more likely to eat out of your hand. I think squirrels are more afraid of humans than chipmunks.
In class
Chipmunk braver, smaller, friendlier and more curious
Squirrel more aggresive (I was attacked by one once...lol), bigger, blah blah blah. |

Calling chipmunks and squirrels the same is like saying dolphins and porpoises are identical. No. same family and superficially similar, but different species and genus.
Both are common in korea, you just have to take a walk in the nearest wood.
Siberian Chipmunk Tamias sibiricus
up to 25cm long.
Korean Red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris coreae
Up to 43 cm.

That's what happens if you climb up a tree and act like a nut. |
