I haven't been posting here for a while, but I've been reading. This I really have to write something on as I've been annoyed by the coverage over it.. forgive my flippant tone.

Your poll question & some of your answers...
What if the shooter were ME? I'm a foreigner, but not in the ESL field. Would they still deport ESL teachers in that case?
BTW, Hi Moldy! What's has been annoying you about the coverage?
And what's the temp on the Strip right now? |

Doing fine, Jongno, having a good time, sometimes missing Korea a little-- it has been in the high twenties, around 80F I believe.:>
I have been annoyed that the American media is already tilting the story to suggest the country's failing to intervene with a troubled youth. I haven't seen enough Korean media reaction to the story yet, although I'm impressed to see that they are not ignoring the story. I do not think a story this large could be.
Of course, it would make an immediate difference if the assassin were a soldier, student, or educator, but I honestly don't think that everyone would make the distinction-- it would just be one of those #&$ foreigners in our Korea who did it. I know some female teachers who looked nothing like soldiers who were glared at after the '02 army tank accident.

You left the poll option "Several men would set themselves on fire in front of the American embassy" off the poll. |

Cho was not an american citizen and it's not american culture's fault that he was nutso. I guess your argument would be the same if he lived in France or China and he did the same thing there? Give me a break!!! |

Ken, I hope all ended up well for you where you are.
On your reaction to the American press coverage of this: have you not figured it out yet? It is always all our fault -- as a nation, as a culture, as individuals. And bitterly so.
Nevermind the following facts, as reported by CNN...
Quote: |
...a note has been found indicating Cho showed anger against "rich kids..." Cho left a note in his dorm in which he railed against "rich kids," "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on the Virginia Tech campus.
Cho had a history of mental illness...
Cho may have been taking medication to combat depression and...his recent behavior was troubling, including setting a fire in a dorm and stalking women...
Draft scripts for two plays allegedly written by Cho for a writing class contain "really twisted, macabre violence," according to a student who was in class with him at Virginia Tech.
Ian McFarlane, now an AOL employee, describes the writing as "very graphic" and "extremely disturbing."
The writings were provided to CNN by AOL. The employee also wrote a blog to accompany the two scripts.
McFarlane said in the blog that when the class read Cho's work, "it was like something out of a nightmare."
"The plays had really twisted, macabre violence that used weapons I wouldn't have even thought of. Before Cho got to class that day, we students were talking to each other with serious worry about whether he could be a school shooter." |
That is, this story contains deep complexities. Not to mention the randomness that sometimes people just crack and we do not really understand exactly how and why they crack at this particular place and time...
Is it not just easier to self-righteously seize on the usual simplistic stereotype "Look at what decadent America has done now...!"
I cannot but see the irony of Cho's status as a South-Korean national: had a similar event happened in South Korea, people would have blamed Americans; and now that this event indeed happened in America, people are blaming Americans.
Go figure.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened already.
-considering the number of whackos that end up teaching here, not to mention the alienation and sheer difficulty for foreigners to adapt into this culture. |

I guess if Cho had done something like win a superbowl MVP award, pitched a no-hitter, or won a few golf tournaments then it would be a case of "Korean Domination," "Korean Pride," "Korean Son Makes Good" or whatever. Where he grew up wouldn't matter a bit. The only thing that would matter is the fact that he/she had at lest 1/1000% Korean blood. If anything these threads on Dave's and the one's I have read on Naver and Daum provide ample evidence of the hypocrisy many in Korea (including the government and especially the media) exhibit concerning issues such as this. |
